Norfolk State falls at home to UNC-Wilmington

NORFOLK, Va. - Visiting UNC Wilmington rode a 17-5 edge in second-chance points to a 61-57 win over host Norfolk State on Sunday night at Echols Hall.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 0-7 on the season, while the Seahawks improved to 3-3.

The taller Seahawks held an 18-7 edge in offensive rebounds and turned that into 17 second-chance points. Naqaiyyah Teague and Rebekah Banks led UNCW with 13 points and nine rebounds apiece, and Amber Reeves scored 10 points.

Yazmen Hannah and Koryn Lawrence scored 12 points each for the Spartans.

VCU runs past Lady Hawks

RICHMOND, Va. – In their fifth meeting, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team dropped their nonconference matchup against the Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) Rams, 63-39, inside the Siegel Center.

With the loss, UMES fell to 3-7 overall while the Rams improved to 7-2 on the season.

Hornets Fly Past Seahawks for First Home Win, 66-44

DOVER, Del. – Four players scoring in double figures, in addition to turning in its best all-around defensive performance of the season, headlined the Delaware State women’s basketball team’s (2-7) convincing 66-44 win over the Wagner Seahawks (2-6) Sunday afternoon at Memorial Hall.

With this victory, DSU not only secured its first home victory of the season, snapping a seven-game skid dating back to last year, but it resulted in the Lady Hornets’ first double digit victory at Memorial Hall over a NCAA Division I opponent since a 67-52 win over UMES on Dec. 1, 2012.

Delaware State registered season-bests for lowest points (44) and field goals made (18) allowed, in addition to limiting the Seahawks to just 29 percent (18-of-63).  The Lady Hornets also forced 20 turnovers, resulting in 23 points off those miscues.  Offensively, forward Amber Bogard scored 10 of her 12 points (6-of-14) in the second half, whereas freshman NaJai Pollard tallied her team-leading second double-double of the season with 13 points (6-of-12) and 10 boards.

Delaware State will hit the road to take on the Temple Owls on Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.).
