Aggies Earn Their First Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- North Carolina A&T sophomore guard Sam Hunt scored a career-high 32 points to lead the men's basketball to a 74-63 win over Northern Kentucky Monday night at Corbett Sports Center.

It was the Aggies (1-7) first win of the season and it ended a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season. Senior point guard Ahmad Abdullah added six points and eight assists while playing all 40 minutes. Jalen Billups had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Norse.

N.C. A&T trailed by two three minutes into the second half, but a Joshea Singleton layup followed by a 3-point play from Bruce Beckford gave the Aggies a 46-43 lead. But Abdullah hit a baseline jumper, Hunt hit a free throw and Abdullah found Singleton alone in the corner for a 3-pointer that gave the Aggies a 67-58 advantage with 3:34 to play. Beckford slipped behind the defense and took a pass from Singleton to complete the 8-0 run.

The Aggies welcome their cross-town rivals UNC Greensboro to Corbett for the first time in almost 24 years. The tip is at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Taylor’s Career Night Leads Norfolk State victory

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Norfolk State men’s basketball team used a big run at the midway point of the second half and then held off a late rally by Northern Arizona in a 70-66 victory over the Lumberjacks on Monday evening at the Walkup Skydome.

Senior D’Shon Taylor played a big part in the victory, going for a career-high 31 points on 9-of-14 shooting. He sank 5-of-8 from the 3-point line, the second straight game he converted five buckets from long range. He topped his previous career high of 25 set last season at Bethune-Cookman.

Senior Jeff Short had 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting, as he and Taylor combined for 50 of the team’s 70 points on the evening.

Up by just two, 68-66 with 11.4 seconds on the clock, NSU threw the ball away on the inbounds pass to give the Lumberjacks a shot to win. But with 4.7 left, Marcus DeBerry’s pass toward the left wing found nothing but air and fell out of bounds. Short then hit two free throws to ice the victory.

Junior Jonathan Wade led the Spartans with six rebounds and also added six points.

After flying home on Tuesday, NSU will host Mercy College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Joseph Echols Hall.
