Savannah State drops final match of the season to S.C. State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University volleyball team (0-31, 0-10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) dropped its final match of the season to South Carolina State University (4-18, 4-6 MEAC) 3-0 (25-14, 26-24,25-18) Sunday afternoon in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium.

Before the match, the Lady Tigers honored the lone senior one the team, Christian Lyle.  The middle blocker was second on the team with six kills during the match.

Junior middle blocker Gabrielle Nathaniel led the team with seven kills, while junior setter Caitlynn Masoe led the team with 21 assists and junior libero Alexis Washington led the team with 10 digs.

Nathaniel added five digs and two assists, while Masoe added four kills and seven digs.  Freshman outside hitter Chinenye Ofodile added five kills, two service aces and five digs, while freshman outside hitter Makayla Tam added four kills and five digs.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by Kiana Stone with nine kills, Melanie Williams with 29 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double, and Marcella Chestnut with 12 digs.

Maryland Eastern Shore sweeps past Delaware State

DOVER, Del. — In their final MEAC road contest of the year, the Hawks volleyball squad were looking for their third victory over their Route 13 rivals, along with their third straight victory. They did just that, securing a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-19, 25-17) over the Hornets to win their third straight match. UMES improves to 20-6 (8-3 MEAC) while Delaware State fell to 2-23 (0-10 MEAC).

Senior Petra Jerabkova had perhaps the most impressive all-around performance, registering a double-double with 33 assists and 14 digs while chipping in six aces. Freshman Lucia Babic totaled 11 kills to lead the team, and senior Andjela Reljic delivered 15 digs. Junior Haley Robinson hit .556 for the match with six kills against one error.

For the Hornets, Jasmine Jackson recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.

UMES plays one final road match against Virginia Commonwealth on Wednesday evening, before closing their regular season and MEAC schedule at home Friday versus Norfolk State.

Wildcats Rally Past NCCU on Senior Day

DURHAM, N.C. – Both North Carolina Central University seniors had season-high performances on their Senior Day as middle blocker Kelly Rossip blasted a match-high 17 kills and libero Marilyn Sherbondy made a match-high 22 digs in a 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) home lost to Bethune-Cookman University Sunday afternoon in McDougald-McLendon Arena.

Rossip ripped her 17 kills at a precise clip, posting a .263 hitting percentage on 38 attempts. Rossip also had one aces and four block assists for 20 points.

Freshman Whitney White continued her strong play down the stretch with 10 kills and was followed by junior Kelsey Murphy (9 kills), junior Casey Curran (7) and freshman Sydney Sumner (4).

Sherbondy had nearly half of the Lady Eagles 51 digs with her 22 successful passes. Sherbondy surpassed the 500 digs plateau on her senior day and had 505 in her career with one match left.  Sumner also reached double digits with 11 digs.

Murphy had two of NCCU’s three aces. Curran recorded 26 assists and sophomore Paige Phillips added 16 assists as the Lady Eagles hit .117 for the match.

The Wildcats attacked with a .258 hitting percentage and got double figure kills from Rhea Simon (13 kills) and Jill Arlaud (11).

Setter Hazel Ortiz-Rosado tallied a double-double with 38 assists and 13 digs, while also contributing six kills and two block assists.

Bethune-Cookman was strong defensively with Normarie Rolon leading the back row with 17 digs and Rakaya Neely pacing the front row with eight blocks (three solo, five assists).

NCCU will conclude its 2015 season with a non-conference road match at Winthrop University on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Norfolk State blanks Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball lost its final home match of the season Sunday afternoon at Holland Hall, as rival Norfolk State defeated the Lady Pirates 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-22).

The Lady Pirates fell to 3-21 overall and 3-8 in MEAC play.

Reeana Richardson led the Lady Pirates with 14 kills on the afternoon, hitting .320, while Tatyana Thomas added seven kills and Allysa Medina, in her final home match, added five to go along with six digs. Thomas hit .545 for the match.

Kyndall Nicholas had five kills and no errors in six attacks, hitting a team-best .833 while also recording a team-high five blocks.

Brianna Lilly had 15 assists and two of Hampton’s three service aces, while Alexandra Erhart had 10.

Mallory Beard had a team-high 10 digs.

The Lady Pirates hit .195 (38 kills, 21 errors in 87 attacks) for the match and held a 7-3 edge in blocks.

Tyler Clarke led the Spartans with 11 kills.

The Lady Pirates will wrap up the 2015 season on Friday at Delaware State at 6 p.m.

Okpegbue becomes CSU’s all-time kills leader in loss to Morgan State

BALTIMORE, Md. - Cindy Okpegbue reached the Coppin State volleyball summit at precisely 3:53 p.m. Eastern Standard Time during a tough 3-2 road setback to Morgan State at Hill Fieldhouse.

It was at that moment the affable 5 foot, 8 inch Okpegbue became the all-time school record holder in kills, surpassing former teammate Ariel Richard, who established the mark of 1,223 last season. A fiercely focused Okpegbue unleashed a swift and vicious onslaught of a match-high 26 kills to raise her career total to 1,245.

Okpegbue had some help as freshman Samantha Polk finished with a career-best 18 kills and a .333 hitting percentage.

Denali Sturgeon and Bailee Jackson provided eight kills each for the Lady Eagles. Senior setter supreme Chelsee Sauni notched her eighth double-double of the season with 48 assists and 11 digs despite being in pain for much of the match. Sauni also delivered a season-best four service aces. Glory Rosado was her usual terrific self in finishing with a team-high 12 digs.

Making her first career start, freshman Megan Lim had eight digs, three assists and three kills.

Meanwhile, Morgan State (12-14, 9-3) had four players with at least 10 kills: Evely Macedo (17), Dinah Jones (16), Arianna Hayden (13) and Samantha Prescott (10). Carmen Fernandez had 60 assists.
