MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS

NORFOLK, Va. – James Daniel, III of Howard was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  Justin Ravenal, of Florida A&M, earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Morgan State’s Phillip Carr was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Daniel, III (G, 5-11, 165, Jr., Hampton, Va.) averaged 30.3 points to lead the Bison to three non-conference wins last week.  He knocked down 30 points, hitting 16-of-19 free throws, with three assists and three steals in a win over Texas Southern. Also, he poured in 39 points, shooting 13-of-15 at the charity strip, in a 79-77 win over William & Mary.  This is Daniel’s second straight MEAC player of the week honor.

Ravenal (G, 6-1, 175, Fr., Lithonia, Ga.) totaled 37 points, seven rebounds and two steals in three non-conference games last week.  He recorded two 16-point performances against Texas El Paso and Alcorn State and tallied nine combined 3-pointers for the week. 

Carr (F, 6-8, 200, Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) hauled down a game-high 17 rebounds with two blocked shots in a win over Goldey-Beacom.  Also he added eight boards with a pair of blocks and two steals against High Point.  Offensively, he recorded 14 points against Goldey-Beacom for a double-double and 11 points, hitting 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, against High Point.

 

Other Top Performers

Malcolm Bernard (FAMU) registered at triple double of 14 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists in a 73-71 non-conference victory over Alcorn State.

Marcel Boyd (HOW) recorded a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, shooting perfectly from the field (5-for-5) in a win over Central Arkansas.

Eric Eaves (SCSU) connected on 55-percent from the field as he averaged 25.5 points in two non-conference matchups against Allen and Kansas State. 

Dominique Elliott (UMES) nailed 9-of-12 shots from the field, including 3-for-3 from the charity strip, to lead the Hawks with 21 points, eight rebounds and two assists in a 70-57 win over St. Francis (Pa.).

Dante Holmes (NCCU) finished with 24 points, 16 rebounds, three assists and four steals in non-conference matchups against Quinnipiac and Louisiana Tech.

D’Shon Taylor (NSU) scored 23 points, with a career-high five 3-pointers, including nine rebounds and five assists against DePaul.

Kyle Thomas (MSU) shot 8-for-12 from the field and hit a pair of 3-pointers to finish with a team- and career-high 19 points against High Point.

Joshua Treadwell (CSU) scored a career-high 15 points, hitting 8-for-10 from the free-throw line, with five rebounds against Towson.
