Batchelor gets 200th win as UMES defeats Cheyney
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – In his third attempt, University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball head coach Fred Batchelor and the Lady Hawks broke through and picked up their leaders’ 200th collegiate victory as they defeated the Cheyney Wolves, 76-46, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
With the win, UMES moved to 2-3 overall while Cheyney dropped to 0-4 on the season.
After a close first half, the Lady Hawks’ second half surge would be the difference as they outscored the Wolves, 47-21. In the third and fourth quarters, Maryland Eastern Shore shot 60-percent (18-of-30) from the field and 67-percent (10-of-15) from beyond the arc.
Guard Moengaroa Subritzky led the charge as she finished with a team-high 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from downtown. Senior center Taryana Kelly added 10 points and a game-high 8 boards in the victory.
TeAmber Burke recorded 13 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe. Freshman guard Keyera Eaton tallied a career-high 10 points off the bench on 50-percent (4-of-8) shooting from the floor in the victory.
For Cheyney, DeJesus had a game-high 15 points on 3-of-5 shooting from downtown while TaKayla chipped in 10 points in a losing effort.
After the Thanksgiving holidays (Dec. 2), Maryland Eastern Shore concludes its two-game home stand against Mount St. Mary’s. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Late rally not enough as NSU Falls to Oakland
NORFOLK, Va. - Nola Anderson scored 21 points to lead four Oakland players in double figures, and the visiting Golden Grizzlies held off a furious late Norfolk State rally to down the Spartans, 83-73 on Tuesday night at Echols Hall.
Siobhan Beslow scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Spartans (0-4). Koryn Lawrence also scored 18 points, freshman guard Yazmen Hannah dropped in a career-high 17 and Kayla Roberts contributed a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Olivia Nash had 17 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks for Oakland. Elena Popkey added 16 points and Sinclair Russell 13.
Beslow notched her second double-double of the year while also blocking three shots and notching three steals. Roberts and Lawrence also blocked a pair of shots apiece. The trio also combined for 10 steals, and Lawrence handed out a game-high seven assists.
The Spartans are back in action at No. 8 Mississippi State at 7 p.m. Friday.

Early Woes Costs Lady Eagles Loss to the Lancers
FARMVILLE, Va. – Juniors Chantal Thomas and Monique Whaley-Briggs both cashed in career-high point totals for the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team in a 60-49 non-conference road loss at Longwood University Tuesday evening in Willett Hall.
The Lancers led for the final 39 minutes after holding the Lady Eagles to just two field goals in the first quarter to pick up their first win of the season. Longwood (1-3 Overall) also forced winless NCCU (0-3) into a season-high 27 turnovers.
Senior teammate Tisha Dixon matched Thomas for game-high scoring honors with 13 points apiece. Whaley-Briggs followed with 12 points as the trio accounted for 38 of the Lady Eagles’ 49 points.
Freshman Dominique Adams led all players with nine rebounds as NCCU controlled the glass by a 45-35 rebounding margin. Dixon also seized seven boards for the Maroon and Gray.
Longwood had four players in double digits, including a team-high 12 points off the bench from Deborah Headen. Kyndal Skersick finished with 11 points and Gilliam and junior Daeisha Brown both deposited 10 points. Sophomore Micaela Ellis was held scoreless but chipped in six assists for the victors.
Thomas tallied two of NCCU’s four assists and senior Kristin Askew led the Lady Eagles with three steals.
NCCU concludes play for the opening month of the season at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Savannah State falls on the road to Florida
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Junior center Tiyonda Davis led the Savannah State University women’s basketball team (1-2) with seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals, while adding three points as the Lady Tigers fell to the University of Florida (3-1) 99-34 Tuesday night in O’Connell Center.
Junior guard Kenyata Hendrix led the team with 13 points, including nine points in the third quarter, on 6-for-12 shooting, and added two rebounds, two assists and a block, while junior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw added six points and junior forward Jeremica Edwards added five rebounds and five points.
The Gators were led by Ronni Williams and January Miller with 16 points each, followed by Eleanna Christinaki and Tyshara Fleming with 11 points each. Williams added 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Fleming added eight rebounds.
The Lady Tigers close out the three-game stretch against Southeastern Conference opponents against No. 8 Mississippi State on Sunday at 3 p.m. before returning home to play in-state rival Georgia Southern on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena.

Florida A&M downs Kennesaw State in overtime
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – It took an extra frame, but the Lady Rattlers of FAMU (2-3, 0-0 MEAC), defeated the Owls of Kennesaw State (2-4), 69-67 on a put-back by Khadejra Young. The game marked the first contest played in the Lawson Center under the new four quarter rule implemented this season by the NCAA.
Shalaunda Bunrey-Robinson and Young both led the Rattlers with 15 points each. Olivia Antilla scored 14 points and Cedricka Sweeting added 11 to round out the foursome of double-figure scorers. Burney-Robinson also led the Rattlers with eight rebounds, while also collecting two assists.
The Owls were led by Taylor Smith, who led all scorers with 17 points. Deandrea Sawyers had 12, Jasmine McAllister had 11 and Iceis Walker chipped in 10 to lead the Owls. McAllister would grab a game-high 13 rebounds to round out her double-double on the night.
The Rattlers led 21-17 after the first quarter and took a 34-32 lead into halftime. After the third quarter the score was 51-48 in favor of FAMU. At the end of regulation, the teams were tied at 63.
The Lady Rattlers will travel to Kennesaw to play in the Kennesaw Tournament, Nov. 28-29.
