UMES’ rally comes up short against Xavier

CINCINNATI – In their second matchup against a Big East foe, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit, but came up short as the Xavier Musketeers held on to win, 61-56, inside the Cintas Center.

With the setback, Maryland Eastern Shore falls to 1-3 overall while Xavier improves to 2-1 on the season.

UMES outscored Xavier in the paint, 32-14, and had fewer turnovers, 15-6. After a tough shooting first half, the Lady Hawks rebounded and shot 43-percent (16-of-37) from the field, including 6-of-11 from downtown.

Guard Moengaroa Subritzky finished with a team-high 17 points after shooting 7-of-13 from the floor. Senior guard TeAmber Burke played 37 minutes and contributed with 15 points and six boards in a losing effort.

Ciani Byrom tallying 10 points off the bench while Taryana Kelly added seven points and six rebounds in the loss.

For the Musketeers, Aliyah Zantt had a game-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Marquia Turner chipped in 14 points while Leah Schaefer recorded seven points and a game-high 12 boards in the victory.

This Tuesday before Thanksgiving (Nov. 24), the Lady Hawks host Cheyney (Pa.) at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Game is slated for 2 p.m., followed by the men at 5:30 p.m.

Hendrix Scores 15 Points as Savannah State Falls to Auburn

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior guard Kenyata Hendrix led the Savannah State University women’s basketball with 15 points as the Lady Tigers (1-1) fell to Auburn University (3-1) 62-40 in Tiger Arena Sunday.

Hendrix went 5-for-13 from the field and 3-for-5 from the free throw line and added four rebounds, an assist and a steal, while sophomore forward Shanikwa Buie led the team with six rebounds and added five points and a steal.

Sophomore guard Deyja Brown added eight points and two steals, while junior center Tiyonda Davis added seven points, four rebounds and two steals with one block.

Auburn was led by Brandy Montgomery with a game-high 16 points, while Tra’Cee Tanner and Jonika Garvin added 12 points.  Tanner recorded a game-high eight rebounds.

The Lady Tigers continue facing SEC opponents with a trip to Gainesville, Fla., to face the University of Florida on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and then traveling to Starkville, Miss., on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m.

Coppin State storms back to defeat Towson

TOWSON, Md. - The Coppin State women's basketball team stormed back from an eight-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Towson, 81-69, in a non-conference contest at SECU Arena Sunday afternoon.

Coppin State outscored the stunned Tigers, 33-15, in the decisive 10 minutes to earn their first victory of the 2015-16 season. Coppin State played with purpose, poise and passion in earning a road win to remember.

Coppin State placed four players in double figures highlighted by a career-high 16 points from Omaah Tayong. She was 7-of-10 shooting from the field and scored 14 of her points in the fourth quarter. Tayong's basket with 4 minutes, 33 seconds remaining gave Coppin State the lead for good 62-60. It was the centerpiece of a game-altering 19-1 run over a beautiful five-minute stretch.

Senior guard Amber Griffin scored a career-high 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Junior guard Keena Samuels contributed 15 points, the third time this season she reached double figures in scoring. Janelle Lane added 14 points for the Lady Eagles (1-3 overall).

Overall as a team, Coppin State shot 63.2 percent (12-for-19) in the fourth quarter. The other telling statistic was the Lady Eagles had 10 assists on their 12 baskets. After throwing the ball away 34 times in its double overtime loss on Thursday to UMBC, Coppin State treated the rock better and only committed 11 turnovers.

Towson (0-3) had three players reach double figures highlighted by senior guard Dominique Johnson's 18 points on 18 shots.

Coppin State returns to action next Sunday when it hosts Mount St. Mary's at 3:00 p.m.

Second-half surge lifts UTEP past Hampton

EL PASO, Texas – Points were at a premium at times Sunday afternoon at the Don Haskins Center, but UTEP found its offensive rhythm in the second half en route to defeating the Hampton University women’s basketball team 78-54.

UTEP scored 52 points in the second half.

Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas continued her climb up the program’s all-time scoring list, vaulting to ninth after dropping 18 points on 7-for-17 shooting. She now has 1,354 career points, and she is 19 points shy of Nicole Brathwaite (2000-04) on the all-time list.

She also had a team-high nine rebounds.

Sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe added 14 points, for her second double-digit scoring effort of the season, while also leading the team with three steals.

The Lady Pirates (0-4) shot just 31.1 percent (19-for-61) from the floor, including an 8-for-33 clip (24.2 percent) in the first half. Hampton went 4-for-13 (30.8 percent) from 3-point range and 12-for-21 (57.1 percent) from the free throw line.

Jenzel Nash led UTEP with 23 points, while Starr Breedlove added 22.

The Lady Pirates will wrap up their five-game road trip on Wednesday in Austin, Texas, taking on No. 11 Texas.
