PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Bethune-Cookman, top seed from the Southern Division, rolled into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) semifinals on Friday with a 3-0 win over Coppin State, the fourth seed from the Northern Division, at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.
The Lady Wildcats (14-15) advances to meet the winner of the Morgan State/North Carolina A&T State match on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
Bethune-Cookman hit .451 in the three matches and finished with just three errors.
Delicia Pierre registered 12 kills, six blocks three service aces and two digs, while Hazel Ortiz-Rosado added 35 assists. Defensively, Alexas Thomas added eight digs.
“Overall I thought we played great today, especially after a good week of practice,” Lady Wildcats head coach Brittany Williams, the MEAC Coach of the Year, said. “We’ve gotten to the tournament the past two years, but are very excited to get past the first game and now into the semifinals.”
Cindy Okpegbue, the MEAC Player of the Year, paced Coppin State offensively with 14 kills and six digs. Chelsee Sauni added 30 assists and six digs as the Lady Eagles hit. 188.
“We came into the match with such limitations, with several injuries,” Lady Eagles head coach Kyetta May said. “The girls worked hard and I was proud of the way we played.”
Coppin State concluded its season with a 9-15 record.
