Tate-DeFreitas sets milestone in loss to Oregon
EUGENE, Ore. – Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas dropped 16 points Thursday evening in Matthew Knight Arena, setting a new milestone despite the Hampton University women’s basketball team falling 86-51 to Oregon.
Through 68 career games, Tate-DeFreitas has 1,336 career points, ranking her 10th on the program’s all-time scoring list. She is 11 points shy of ninth-place Gwen Jordan (1,347 points, 1978-82).
Her career average of 19.6 points per game is second-best in program history.
She also had a team-high six rebounds, as did sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe. Lupoe also had six points, as did freshman guard K’lynn Willis.
Redshirt junior guard Chanel Green had four assists.
The Lady Pirates (0-3) shot 32.8 percent (20-for-61) from the floor and made five of 17 3-pointers (29.4 percent). Hampton shot just 25.8 percent (8-for-31) from the floor in the first half.
Oregon shot 50.0 percent (32-for-64) from the floor and made nine of 25 3-pointers (36.0 percent). The Ducks shot 48.4 percent (15-for-31) in the first half and 51.5 percent (17-for-33) in the second half.
Kat Cooper led four Ducks in double figures with 16 points.
The Lady Pirates will be in El Paso, Texas on Sunday to take on UTEP at 4 p.m.

Maryland Eastern Shore falls on the road to Northeastern
BOSTON – In their first road contest of the season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball team were defeated by the Northeastern Huskies, 60-49, inside the Cabot Center.
With the loss, Maryland Eastern Shore dropped to 1-2 overall while Northeastern moved to 3-0 on the season.
Similar to their game against Georgetown, the Lady Hawks could not find any offensive rhythm in the first half; however, heated up after intermission. After shooting only 19-percent (6-of-31) from the floor in the first two quarters, UMES got hot in the final two quarters. After the 15-minute break, Maryland Eastern Shore shot over 46-percent (13-of-28) from the field.
Senior guard TeAmber Burke scored all 13 points in the second half, a team-high. Freshman guard Ciani Byrom added 11 points off the bench in a losing effort.
Other notable Hawks included Moengaroa Subritzky registering 10 points and five boards while Massachusetts native Alexis Udoji grabbed 11 rebounds, a career-high four steals, and two blocks in her return home.
For the Huskies, 2015-16 All-CAA Preseason selection Samantha DeFreese recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Taggart and Gabriella Giacone came off the bench and gave a spark, combining for 27 points on a perfect 5-of-5 from behind the arc.
The Lady Hawks wrap up their brief two-game road trip on Sunday in Cincinnati where the Xavier Musketeers await. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
