Maryland Eastern Shore finishes sixth at NJ Jamboree
NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. — After the Hawks secured a top six finish following the first two days of the New Jersey Jamboree, they were hoping to make a statement on the final day. While it was a feat in itself to make the top six and the championship bracket among the 26 teams, the new month wasn’t kind and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) as they dropped a pair of matches and finished in sixth place overall.
UMES, the sixth seed, opened the day with a match versus Vanderbilt, the three seed. Head Coach Kayla Bandy started a lineup, as usual, anchored by her returners. With Melanie Copey, fresh off her first career 300 game in the lead-off spot and All-American Thashaina Seraus in the anchor. The team took a tough loss in game one, 200-166 but rebounded with the lane change to tie it up at one apiece with a 233-170 win. As the lanes, switched, so did the momentum with Vandy taking the 212-151 win. As they switched back the ‘Dores figured out the lanes and took a 301 lead with a 205-200 win. UMES switched back to take a 228-191 win before falling in game six 241-204 and dropping the match 4-2. Despite the game tallies UMES was outscored by just seven pins 1219-1202.
As the Hawks were falling to Vandy, Sam Houston State was the four-seed, was taking on the fifth-seed Delaware State. DSU got the better of the Bearkats 4-0 and set them up for a date with the Hawks.
UMES fell behind quickly with a 201-169 loss in game one and got down 2-0 after a 232-136 dispatching in game two. The Hawks got on the board in game three with a 169-148 win but SHSU would seal the match with two straight wins, 202-197 and 232-211.
The loss meant Sam Houston and UMES would claim the fifth and sixth spots in the tournament. Vanderbilt would go onto claim the title and relegate Arkansas State to second. Host Fairleigh Dickinson would take third and Delaware State, fourth.
In the consolation bracket the teams would battle it out with Wisconsin-Whitewater taking seventh, Stephen F. Austin was eighth, McKendree was ninth, and North Carolina A&T was tenth. Other conference schools in the event, Bethune-Cookman, Morgan State and Howard finished in 19th, 25th and 26th overall.
UMES takes two weeks off before opening conference play on November 14 & 15 in Baltimore, Md.
