Lady Eagles Complete Series Sweep at Savannah State
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Senior middle blocker Kelly Rossip ripped a season-high 15 kills as the North Carolina Central University volleyball team had its best hitting performance of the season en route to a 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win over host Savannah State University Sunday afternoon in Willcox-Wiley Gym.
The Lady Eagles kept the Lady Tigers winless on the season by hitting a sizzling .282 in taking the three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-20. NCCU (4-22 Overall, 3-5 MEAC) snapped a six-match losing streak with its last win before Sunday also coming against Savannah State (0-30, 0-9) on Oct. 4.
Rossip smashed her 15 kills on 29 swings with only three errors for a .414 hitting percentage. Freshmen Whitney White and Sydney Sumner added eight kills apiece with hitting percentages over .400 as well.
Junior Casey Curran set up the Lady Eagles attack with 31 assists on NCCU’s 36 kills.
Defensively, senior Marilyn Sherbondy and Paige Phillips tallied 12 and nine digs, respectively. White and junior Kelsey Murphy each provided four block assists.
Gabrielle Nathaniel led the Lady Tigers with eight kills, six digs and the teams only ace. Setter Caitlynn Masoe notched 25 assists.
NCCU will conclude MEAC regular season play with its final two home games next weekend.

Hawks clinch tournament berth in four-set win over Coppin State
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — With a 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22) victory over Coppin State and a loss by Hampton to Howard, the Hawks volleyball squad clinched a spot in the MEAC tournament in three weeks in their own backyard. The team improved to 18-6 (6-3 MEAC) in the process.
The Hawks were led by freshman Zuzana Ondruskova who tallied a double-double with 19 kills and 14 digs. She also added three block assists and an assists to her total. Another freshman, Lucia Babic reached double digits in kills with 18 while converting an amazing 60.7-percent of her attacks.
Senior Petra Jerabkova averaged 10.5 assists per set with 42 total for the match, and freshman Marta Klafuric helped out on the most blocks with six. Klafuric and senior Andjela Reljic added two aces, while Reljic delivered 30 digs for her second 30 dig performance of the season.
UMES hits the road for three matches, starting Friday at Norfolk State.

Bethune-Cookman sweeps Florida A&M
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FAMU Women’s Volleyball team dropped a hard fought 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference decision to archrival Bethune-Cookman at the Al Lawson Center.
The outcome clinched the MEAC Southern Division title for Bethune-Cookman (11-15, 8-0 in MEAC), ending several streaks in the process. FAMU will head to the MEAC Tournament, Nov. 20-22 as the number two seed from the Southern Division.
FAMU had dominated the Southern Division, winning every title since the league went to the divisional format in the 1990s.
Sunday’s loss was FAMU’s first home conference loss since the early 1990s, and the first-ever in the Coach Tony Trifonov Era.
Starmichael Tucker led FAMU with a match-high 14 kills, followed by Deija Martin with eight kills, Andrea Soriano with seven and Tamar Fowler with five.
Delicia Pierre led Bethune-Cookman with 12 kills, followed by Maya Davis with seven kills.
FAMU will close the regular season this weekend on the road with divisional matches against North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T State, Friday and Sunday.

Hampton falls in four sets to Howard
HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team kicked off a three-match home stand on Sunday afternoon in Holland Hall with a four-set loss to Howard, which won 3-1 (25-10, 25-18, 17-25, 25-23).
The Lady Pirates fell to 2-20 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
Allysa Medina led the Lady Pirates with 10 kills and nine digs, while Reeana Richardson added nine kills and four blocks, hitting .217. Tatyana Thomas hit a team-best .385, tallying seven kills and just two errors in 13 attacks.
Kyndall Nicholas had a team-high nine blocks.
Lena Washington and Mallory Beard each had eight digs on defense. Alexandra Erhart had a team-high 17 assists, splitting time with Brianna Lilly at setter. Lilly had 15 assists.
Hampton hit .169 for the match, recording 41 kills and 21 errors in 118 total attacks. Howard (14-13, 10-1 MEAC) hit .233 for the match and held a 10-3 edge in service aces.
Hampton held a 12-7 advantage in blocks.
Khalia Donaldson led Howard with 16 kills.
The Lady Pirates will return to Holland Hall on Friday to take on Delaware State at 6 p.m.

Jackson posts 10th double-double in loss to Morgan State
DOVER, Del. --- Jasmine Jackson posted her 10th double-double of the season, but it was not enough in Delaware State’s 3-0 MEAC loss to Morgan State in Memorial Hall.
The scores were 25-23, 25-12 and 25-19.
Jackson led all players with a season-high 20 kills and tied for the team lead with 11 digs in the contest. She also had a block assist to post 20.5 points in the match.
Evely Macedo led a balanced Morgan State attack with 12 kills, while teammate Carmen Fernandez had a match-high 32 assists.
The Bears posted a .278 hitting percentage in the match, recording 38 kills and 11 errors on 97 attacks. The Hornets had a .091 percentage in the contest (35/25/110).
Morgan State had 47 digs, compared to 44 for DSU. Alliyah McBean tied for the team lead with 11 digs, while MSU’s Minja Rankov led all players with 13.
The Bears improved to 11-13 overall and 8-2 in the MEAC, while DSU fell to 2-21 and 0-8.
The Hornets return to action on Friday (Nov. 6) with a MEAC contest at Hampton. The match begins at 6 p.m. in Hampton, Va. DSU is back home next Sunday (Nov. 8) for a 1 p.m. contest against UMES.

Lady Bulldogs fall to North Carolina A&T State
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The South Carolina State women’s volleyball team fell to North Carolina A&T State, 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18) on Sunday afternoon.
Ashante Finnie and Brianna Dafney each tallied 10 kills for S.C. State and Kiana Stone and Anderson had nine kills apiece. Marcella Chestnut and Kirby Anderson had 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
The Lady Bulldogs close out the regular season with their final MEAC match at Savannah State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
