Virginia starts fast in 86-50 win over Norfolk State

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Host Virginia rode a big edge in the first quarter and 17 points from Faith Randolph to an 86-50 win over Norfolk State on Monday night at John Paul Jones Arena.

In what was just the teams' second meeting as Division I opponents, the Cavaliers (2-0) closed the first quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 26-9 edge into the second period and the Spartans (0-2) were never able to catch up.

Sophomore forward Kayla Roberts led NSU with 14 points while fellow forward Siobhan Beslow added 11 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for her first double-double of the year. Junior guard Dominique Harper scored nine points off the bench.

Lauren Moses added 12 points, J'Kyra Brown 11 and the quartet of Mikayla Venson, Breyana Mason, Aliyah Huland El and Mone Jones had 10 each for Virginia, which had seven players score in double figures and shot 51.6-percent from the floor.

NSU returns to action on Saturday in a 4 p.m. game at Loyola (Md.).

Griffin has big night as Coppin State falls to West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Coppin State senior guard Amber Griffin has always enjoyed distributing the ball ever since she started playing basketball.

Her charitable ways have earned her place in Coppin State women's basketball history. She recorded her 300th career assist, becoming the third CSU women's player - and first since 2008 - to reach that milestone in program history during Monday's nonconference women's basketball game at West Virginia.

Griffin finished with eight points and four assists to join legends LeShawn Scott (599 assists) and Shalamar Oakley (326) in the Coppin State 300-assist club.

Coppin State placed three players in double figures led by senior Janelle Lane's 13 points. In reaching double figures for the 24th time in her career, Lane was 4-for-8 shooting from the field. Coppin State junior guard Keena Samuels continued her strong beginning to the season by scoring 12 points for the second straight contest.

Senior guard Jordan Swails tallied 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting. She swished both of her 3-pointers. Senior Omaah Tayong grabbed a team best nine rebounds while sophomore Genesis Lucas led the Lady Eagles with five assists.

Leading West Virginia was senior guard Bria Holmes, who scored 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field. Coppin State returns to action Thursday afternoon when it hosts UMBC in its home opener at noon. It will be a "School Day" event.

Camels Rally Past Lady Eagles in NCCU’s Opener

DURHAM, N.C. – Senior forward Tisha Dixon poured in 14 points and was just one rebound shy of a double-double to pace the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team in its season opener, but visiting Campbell University spoiled the hoops debut on the new McDougald-McClendon Arena floor with a 57-48 win Monday evening.

NCCU jumped ahead on a layup by Dixon on the teams opening possession and stayed in front for the next 15 minutes. However, the Lady Eagles were held to just six points in the second and five in the third, allowing the Lady Camels to rally for the nine-point win.

Campbell (1-1) leveled its record with its eighth straight win in the series. NCCU (0-1) dropped its season opener for the first time in since 2012.

Dixon was 5 of 11 from the field and 4 of 6 from the free throw line on the way to matching her career-high point total of 14. The Kinston, N.C., also led NCCU with nine rebounds and four steals.

Junior guard Morgan Jones contributed eight points and freshman forward Deja McCain paced the Lady Eagles’ reserves with five points. Jones also corralled five rebounds and dished out a game-high five assists. Senior guard Kristin Askew and junior center Tyshay Britten each chipped in four points.

The Lady Eagles were plagued by 21 turnovers, allowing Campbell to outscore NCCU, 22-9, on points off mistakes.

Junior Amanda Coffer highlighted play for the victorious Lady Camels with double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Coffer also had five blocks and three steals. Freshman Summer Price led all players with 15 points.

NCCU will make its longest road trip of the season this weekend as the Lady Eagles visit the University of Nebraska in Lincoln on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Huskers are receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches’ Preseason top-25 poll.

Lady Pirates’ comeback falls short at Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. – A second-half push from the Hampton University women’s basketball team cut the game to single digits Monday night at the Beasley Coliseum, but Washington State held on to come away with a 68-61 win.

Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas recorded her second straight 20-point game to open the season, leading the Lady Pirates with 22 points, hitting four of her seven 3-pointers. Sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe added 13 points, 11 in the second half, on 6-for-11 shooting.

Both players also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

The Lady Pirates (0-2) out-rebounded Washington State 47-38 – including a 17-11 edge on the offensive glass that helped Hampton outscore the Cougars 14-7 in second-chance points.

Hampton also led 34-24 in points in the paint.

Borislava Hristova led the Cougars with 20 points.

The Lady Pirates will be in Eugene, Ore. on Thursday to take on Oregon at 9 p.m. EST.
