DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State volleyball team put up a good fight, but it was not enough in a 3-1 loss to Towson in the Hornets’ 2015 finale in Memorial Hall on Sunday. The Tigers won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-17. The Hornets stayed alive in the match with a 25-18 victory in set three, but Towson won the fourth set 25-19 to claim the match.
Jocelyn Kulian topped all players with 14 kills, while teammate Candace Steadman had 10 to lead the Tigers.
Senior Jasmine Jackson, playing in her final match, led Delaware State with 12 kills to close out her career with 992, third-best in team history. She also had five digs to finish her career with 816, DSU’s Alliyah McBean led all players with 14 digs.
Delaware State scored the first three points in the opening set, and led 12-11 on a kill by NaKia Jones (six kills).
Towson ran off the next five points to open up a 16-12 lead. DSU cut the deficit to 20-19 after a block by Jackson and Amanda McAfee, and an error by the Tigers.
Towson scored the next five points to close out the set.
In set two, the teams played even in the early going. The Hornets tied the set at 8-8 on an ace by Jae Jackson.
Towson scored the next six points to open up a 14-8 lead. DSU trailed 16-10 before scoring six of the next eight points to get closer. The Hornets pulled to within 18-16 on an error by the Tigers.
That was as close as DSU would get. Towson scored seven of the next eight points to win the set and open up a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Hornets started quickly in the third set, scoring the first three points and opening up an 8-4 lead on a kill by Danyelle Tucker off of a feed by Marisol Arredondo, who tied for the match high with 25 assists.
Delaware State led by eight points on seven occasions in the set, the last time on a winner by Jae Jackson to pull ahead 22-14.
The Hornets posted a .379 hitting percentage in the third set, tallying 13 kills and just two errors on 29 attempts.
In the fourth set, DSU used a 4-0 rally to open up a 7-4 lead. Towson responded by scoring the next seven points to pull ahead 11-7.
The Hornets were down 11-10 before Towson began to take control. The Tigers scored eight of the next nine points to open up a 19-11 lead. DSU could get no closer than five points the rest of the way.
Towson had a .306 hitting percentage for the match, collecting 58 kills and 20 errors on 124 attacks. The Tigers had 42 digs, compared to 40 for the Hornets.
Towson improved to 26-5 on the season, while Delaware State closed out its 2015 campaign with a 3-25 overall record.
