SMYRNA, Del. – Florida A&M captured its fourth straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Cross Country championship on Saturday morning at the Delaware State University Outreach and Research Center.
Florida A&M scored 22 points to win its eighth overall MEAC title and fourth in a row. The Lady Rattlers averaged a time of 18:20.58 on the 5K course and had all five runners finish inside the top eight.
“I have never had a cross country team as strong as this one,” Florida A&M head coach Darlene Moore said. “It was a tremendous effort to have all five runners place inside the top ten and we made history today with the school’s first cross country four-peat.”
Florida A&M’s Cynthia Chelelgo was named Outstanding Performer, and became the first Lady Rattler in school history to win the cross country championship after finishing first with a time of 17:49.60.
Coach Moore, of Florida A&M, was named Outstanding coach for the women for the fourth straight year.
Second-place honors went to Maryland Eastern Shore with 62 total points. Hampton (64), Bethune-Cookman (130) and Morgan State (141) completed the top-five team finishes.
