Lady Eagles Downed by South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Freshman Whitney White led the North Carolina Central University volleyball team with season-high totals of nine kills and five blocks in a 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) loss at South Carolina State University on Friday evening in Dukes Gym.

The Lady Bulldogs moved a half-game ahead of the Lady Eagles for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Southern Division standings. SCSU (3-17 Overall, 3-5 MEAC) completed the regular season series sweep over NCCU (3-22, 2-5) with the 25-23, 25-17, 25-19 win.

White pounded down her nine kills on 19 swings with just two errors for a .368 hitting percentage. Her one solo block and four block assists also marked a new season-best block total for the rookie.

Senior Kelly Rossip spiked eight kills on 17 attempts with just one mistake for a .412 hitting percentage.

However, the Lady Eagles other two top attackers in junior Kelsey Murphy and Sydney Sumner both hit in the negative despite tallying five and four kills, respectively.

Sumner led NCCU with 10 digs and junior setter Casey Curran totaled 27 assists.

The Lady Bulldogs offense fired with a .221 precision. Five SCSU players recorded at least five kills, including a match-high 10 kills by Kirby Anderson. She finished with 14 points, adding seven blocks (one solo and six assists).

Melanie Williams guided the hot-hitting attack with 29 assists.

NCCU visits MEAC Southern Division rival Savannah State University on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Masoe Records a Double-Double in Savannah State loss

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior setter Caitlynn Masoe recorded her second double-double of the season with 23 assists and 10 digs as Savannah State University volleyball team (0-29, 0-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to MEAC opponent North Carolina A&T State University (6-11, 4-3 MEAC) 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-16) Friday night.

The Long Beach, Calif., native also recorded a double-double against The Citadel on Oct. 20 with 30 assists and 12 digs.  Masoe added six kills with a .429 hitting percentage against the Aggies.

The Lady Tigers recorded more digs than the NCAT, 54-51, led by junior middle blocker Gabrielle Nathaniel with 15 digs, while junior Alexis Washington added 13 digs.

Nathaniel also added six kills with a service ace, while Tam added four kills, two assists and four digs.  Junior outside hitter Chinenye Ofodile led the team with eight kills and had a .294 hitting percentage and senior middle blocker Christian Lyle added six kills, two service aces and three digs with a .278 hitting percentage.

The Aggies were led by Brooke Stamnes with 17 kills, Liz Martino with 28 assists and Ashley Johnson with 16 digs.

The Lady Tigers continue the three-match homestand with North Carolina Central on Sunday at 1 p.m., followed by South Carolina State, for Senior Day, on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. with both matches in Willcox-Wiley Gym.

Okpegbue and Jackson lead Coppin State past Delaware State

BALTIMORE, Md. – Behind a combined 39 kills from Cindy Okpegbue and Bailee Jackson, the Coppin State volleyball completed a necessary and festive formality by dismissing Delaware State, 3-1, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match Friday night in the Auxiliary Gym.

There was plenty of reason to celebrate for the Lady Eagles who defeated Delaware State 25-15, 25-14, 24-26, 25-15.

Okpegbue led the way with 21 kills, the 57th time in her career she has finished with double-digit kills in a match. She has 1,192 in her amazing career as she closes in on Ariel Richard’s school record 1,223 kills. Okpegbue also enjoyed a productive .382 hitting percentage. She leads the MEAC in kills per set and points per set.

Chelsee Sauni, who leads the MEAC in assists per set, finished with 50 assists, the 42nd time she has recorded at least 50 assists. Denali Sturgeon added nine kills for the Lady Eagles (9-12 overall, 6-4 MEAC).

Leading Delaware State (2-20, 0-7) was senior Jasmine Jackson with 14 kills and Marisol Arredondo had 27 assists.

Coppin State visits Maryland Eastern Shore Sunday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. match.

Maryland Eastern Shore falls in four sets to Morgan State

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – In the night where the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks had an opportunity to move up the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division standings, the squad fell short to Morgan State in four sets, 3-1. As a result, the clubs split the season series with road victories.

With the setback, UMES dropped to 17-6 (5-3 MEAC) overall while the Bears moved to 10-13 (7-2 MEAC).

Senior Petra Jerabkova recorded a double-double, posting 26 dimes and 13 digs. Offensively, sophomore Kirstin Fink tallied a team-high nine kills whereas fellow classmate Alana Polk and freshman Zuzana Ondruskova added eight kills each in a losing effort.

Evely Macedo led the way for the Bears as she recorded a double-double with a match-high 18 kills and 11 digs. Carmen Fernandez also registered a double-double, posting 44 assists and 11 digs in the victory.

On Nov. 1, the Hawks return to the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center as they will face another in-state rival Coppin State. First-serve is 3 p.m.
