Lady Eagles Suffer First MEAC Loss
DURHAM, N.C. – The South Carolina State University volleyball team held off a pair of NCCU set-point opportunities in the third set and eventually won it, 29-27, to complete a 3-0 sweep of the host Lady Eagles on Friday night in the L.T. Walker Complex.
The Lady Bulldogs (1-10 Overall, 1-2 MEAC) won the first two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-16 en route to their first victory of the season. The Lady Eagles (2-16, 1-1) were unable to win for third time in their last four matches.
Junior setter Casey Curran tallied 21 assists, four digs and four blocks (one solo, three assists). Classmate Kelsey Murphy just missed her fifth double-double with 13 kills and nine digs.
Senior Kelly Rossip and Kierra Shipman added seven and five kills, respectively, on NCCU’s attack.
Senior Marilyn Sherbondy logged a team-high 12 digs and sophomore Paige Phillips followed with 11 digs.
Senior setter notched a double-double of 30 assists and 11 digs. Senior Marissa Lawrence matched Murphy’s 13 kills to share match-high honors. Sophomore Ashante Finnie totaled eight kills and 14 digs while classmate Kirby Anderson chipped in six kills and six blocks (one solo, five assists).
NCCU hosts Savannah State University in another MEAC Southern Division contest on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Washington leads with 17 Digs as Savannah State falls to NCAT
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior libero Alexis Washington led Savannah State University volleyball team with 17 digs as the Lady Tigers (0-20, 0-3 MEAC) fell to North Carolina A&T State (3-7, 1-1 MEAC) 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20) Friday night in the Moore Gymnasium.
Washington’s 17 digs is tied for the fifth most in school history in a three-set match and was one off her career-high, which she had 18 digs against The Citadel on Oct. 7, 2014. The Chino, Calif., native also led the team with four service aces.
Three Lady Tigers led the team with five kills each with senior middle blocker Christian Lyle, junior Gabrielle Nathaniel and freshman outside hitter Makayla Tam. Lyle added two block assists, while Nathaniel added five digs and Tam added four digs and a service ace.
Junior setter Caitlynn Masoe led the team with 16 assists and added six digs, a service ace and a block assist, while freshman outside hitter Ayree Gallon added four kills.
The Aggies were led by Brooke Stamnes with 12 kills, Liz Martino with 23 assists and Ashley Johnson with 14 digs.
The Lady Tigers remain in North Carolina to face North Carolina Central in Durham on Sunday at 1 p.m. before returning home for a non-conference match against North Florida on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gym.

Bethune-Cookman sweeps past Florida A&M
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Rhea Simon had 12 kills and Delicia Pierre 11 kills as Bethune-Cookman downed Florida A&M 3-0 (25-22,25-21,25-20) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division match Friday night in Moore Gym.
The Lady Cats (6-12, 3-0 MEAC) took the Division lead with their second straight victory over the arch-rival Rattlers (2-11,2-1). B-CU snapped a 48-match losing streak to Florida A&M in the 2014 regular season finale.
Simon, a senior, had 10 kills over the final two sets, in which the Lady Cats never trailed. She registered the kill on match point to conclude a night that saw her hit .409.
Pierre, who registered her 1,000th career kill Tuesday night against North Florida, also had six blocks and two service. She and Phlyecia Armstrong combined for 11 blocks as B-CU posted 16 blocks to FAMU’s nine and limited the Rattlers to an .077 hitting percentage.
Hazel Ortiz-Rosado posted 27 assists, while Alexus Bennett had seven digs in a balanced Lady Cat defensive effort that included four other players- Pierre, Ajsha Davis, Ortiz-Rosado and Normarie Rolon – posted six digs.
Starmichael Tucker led Florida A&M with 10 kills.
B-CU hosts North Carolina A&T State next Friday.
