Hampton opens season at Hampton Roads Collegiate

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – The Hampton University bowling team opened the 2015-16 season in the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational this past Friday and Saturday at the AMF Lanes Chesapeake, picking up a combined four wins.

The Lady Pirates won three matches in head-to-head and one of their two Baker matches.

Laina Rivers had the team’s best total pinfall (1,227) and average (175.3) for the weekend, as she helped Hampton win head-to-head matches over Coppin State, Saint Peter’s, and Virginia State. Her average was the sixth-best overall for the weekend.

Rivers’ best score of a 208 came against Bowie State. She also had a 188 against Virginia State and a 180 against Saint Peter’s.

Evann Smith had the Lady Pirates’ best score of the weekend, totaling a 222 against Saint Peter’s. She finished the weekend with a total pinfall of 950 in six matches – and her average of 158.3 was second-best on the team.

Daysha Baskin averaged 156.0 for the weekend, totaling 1,092 pins in seven matches. She bowled a weekend-best 193 against Virginia State.

Jenai Teamer averaged 155.9 in seven matches over the weekend, totaling 1,091 pins.

The Lady Pirates defeated Coppin State 760-652 in head-to-head, before beating Saint Peter’s 891-706. Following an 827-792 loss to Bowie State, Hampton rebounded to defeat Virginia State 851-723.

Hampton ended head-to-head play with losses to Morgan State (768-833) and Norfolk State (769-954).

In Baker play, the Lady Pirates fell 4-0 to Virginia State before defeating Coppin State 4-0.

Conference play will start on Nov. 14-15, when the Lady Pirates compete in the MEAC South #1 meet hosted by Norfolk State.
