Okpegbue lifts Coppin State past Norfolk State
BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State senior Cindy Okpegbue did the heavy lifting with a match-high 18 kills during a 3-0 triumph over Norfolk State Friday night in a MEAC match. She has 1,153 kills in her sterling career.
It’s the third time in the Lady Eagles’ last four matches she has finished with at least 18 kills. Samantha Polk added nine kills for the Lady Eagles, which also received 31 assists from senior Chelsee Sauni. Sophomores Bailee Jackson and Glory Rosado finished with 14 digs each.
Alexa Williams enjoyed a solid effort with five kills and three blocks to help Coppin State finish Norfolk State by scores of 25-23 in all three sets. In sweeping Norfolk State for the second straight season, the Lady Eagles raised their overall record to 8-11 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
Norfolk State (2-17 overall, 1-5 MEAC) was led by Angie Darcus’ 16 kills and Darcy Moore’s 29 assists.
Coppin State continues its three-match homestand Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. against Hampton. Norfolk State visits Morgan State at the same time Sunday.

Florida A&M holds off South Carolina State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida A&M toughed out a 3-1 (26-24, 19-25, 25-23, 25-20) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division match win over South Carolina State Friday evening at the Al Lawson Center.
FAMU (5-17, 5-1 in MEAC South) retained their hold on second place in the division behind rival Bethune-Cookman.
Pamela Soriano had a match-high 14 kills, while adding 12 digs, followed by Starmichael Tucker with 13 kills and a pair of service aces, Ginna Lopez with 12 kills and Deija Martin with six kills.
Freshman Valentina Carrasco had 18 digs, while Valeria Lopez had 43 assists and eight digs.
Marissa Lawrence and Brianna Dafney led SCSU with 12 kills apiece, followed by Kiana Stone with 11 kills and Kirby Anderson with 10. Marcella Chestnut led the Bulldogs with 17 digs, while Melanie Williams dished out 45 assists for SCSU.
Florida A&M will host Savannah State Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Al Lawson Center. They will face off against Bethune-Cookman a week from Sunday, Nov. 1 at 3:00 p.m. in their 2015 home finale.

Lady Eagles Suffer Road Loss to the Aggies
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Kelsey Murphy was one dig shy of a double-double but 50 combined errors by North Carolina Central University led to a 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division loss to host North Carolina A&T State University Friday evening in the Corbett Center.
The Aggies (5-11 Overall, 3-3 MEAC) move ahead of the Lady Eagles (3-21, 2-4) in the divisional standings with the 25-16, 17-25, 25-19, 25-18 win.
Murphy – the league-leader in kills per set – produced a team-high 13 kills and tallied nine digs and four blocks (two solo, two assists). Freshman Kierra Shipman had the Lady Eagles hottest hand with nine kills on 19 swings with just one error for a .421 hitting percentage. Senior Kelsey Murphy and freshman Sydney Sumner chipped in six and four kills, respectively.
Senior Marilyn Sherbondy tallied a season-high 20 digs to lead all defenders. Rossip added three block assists on the front row defense. Sophomore Paige Phillips matched Murphy with nine digs and Sumner scooped up seven.
Junior libero Casey Curran notched 31 assists.
Alyssa Pitt and Brooke Stamnes both put down 15 kills to account for 30 of the Aggies 43 spikes. Stamnes supplied 14 digs to complete a double-double. Pitt made a match-high six blocks (two solo, four assists).
NCCU plays its final two league road matches next weekend, visiting South Carolina State University (Friday, 7 PM) and Savannah State University (Sunday, 1 PM).

Savannah State falls in straight sets to Bethune-Cookman
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Savannah State University volleyball team fell to Bethune-Cookman University 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-14) in Moore Gymnasium on Friday night.
Freshman outside hitter Makayla Tam led the team with six kills and added six digs, while junior setter Caitlynn Masoe led the team with 18 assists and added two kills and nine digs.
The Lady Wildcats were led by Rhea Simon with 13 kills, Hazel Ortiz-Rosado with 37 assists and Normarie Rolon-Soto with 15 digs.
The Lady Tigers continue its Florida trip traveling to Tallahassee on Sunday at 3 p.m. before returning home for the final three matches starting with North Carolina A&T State on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gym.

Hampton falls to Morgan State in straight sets
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University volleyball team fell in straight sets at Talmadge Hill Field House on Friday evening, as Morgan State won the match 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 30-28).
The Lady Pirates fell to 1-19 overall and 1-6 in MEAC play this season.
Reeana Richardson led Hampton with 16 kills, while she and Mallory Beard each had eight digs to lead the Lady Pirates on the defensive end. Richardson hit .313 for the match, while Tatyana Thomas hit a team-best .400 (eight kills, two errors in 15 attacks).
Brianna Lilly racked up 37 of Hampton’s 40 assists.
Erin Napoleon had two of the Lady Pirates’ three service aces.
Morgan State (8-13, 5-2 MEAC) hit .299 for the match, while the Lady Pirates hit .180 (43 kills, 23 errors in 111 total attacks).
Keana Brown led Morgan State with nine kills.
The Lady Pirates will be at Coppin State on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Howard tops Maryland Eastern Shore in battle of Northern Division
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball squad had a chance to seize first place in the MEAC Northern Division for themselves. However, the team in front of them, Howard, had other ideas. The Bison successfully defended their home court and their hold on first place with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 21-25, 25-18) victory at Burr Gymnasium Friday night.
The Bison improve to 11-13 overall (7-1 MEAC) while the Hawks fall to 17-4 (5-2 MEAC).
Sophomore Alana Polk supplied a good amount of offense and defense for the team, with seven kills, a solo block, six blocking assists, and two digs. Those numbers go along with a .333 attack percentage for Polk. Freshman Zuzana Ondruskova led with eight kills and sophomore Ashanti Price led in digs with 13. Ondruskova also reached double digit digs with 11, as did sophomore Kirstin Fink.
A non-conference match with George Mason awaits UMES on Tuesday at the Hytche Center, kicking off a three game home stretch.

DSU drops 3-0 decision to Stony Brook
STONY BROOK, N.Y. --- Kathy Fletcher tallied 15 kills and Stephanie McFadden 11 to lead Stony Brook to a 3-0 non-conference win over visiting Delaware State at Pritchard Gymnasium this evening. The scores were 25-8, 25-12 and 25-13.
Jasmine Jackson led the Hornets with eight kills, while Marisol Arredondo and Taylor Marshall had seven assists each.
The Seawolves (10-14) posted a .558 hitting percentage in the match, recording 51 kills and eight errors on 77 attacks.
The Hornets (2-18) had a .031 hitting percentage (17 kills/15 errors /64 attempts) in the contest.
McKyla Brooks and Taylor Wilson added eight kills each for Stony Brook, while Nicole dished out 42 assists for the Wolves. Brooks also led all players with seven blocks.
Delaware State totaled 11 blocks. Jackson and Jenessa Helu led the Hornets with three each.
DSU returns to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action on Sunday (Oct. 25) against Howard. The match begins at 1 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
