Hawks defeat La Salle for sixth straight win

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — With timely points and benefits from errors by the visiting the La Salle Explorers, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team secured their sixth straight win with a 3-0 decision (25-23, 25-20, 25-19) on Tuesday night at the Hytche Center.

UMES improves to 17-3 on the season while La Salle dropped to 6-18.

Only one player on either side—Hawks freshman Zuzana Ondruskova —totaled double digits in kills with 16. She also amassed a .342 kill percentage, three digs, two assists and a block assist. Fellow freshman Lucia Babic registered a .412 attack percentage with her eight kills, and sophomore Alana Polk was once again solid on the front row with six kills and six block assists. Senior Andjela Reljic supplied 14 digs for the Hawks.

La Salle had two players with nine kills in Kelly Perillo and Bryanna Davis, and Perillo delivered a .273 kill percentage in the loss.

The Hawks hope the non-conference victory will be a stepping stone to Friday’s crucial conference matchup with the Howard Bison. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.

Lady Eagles Drop Weekday Tilt to the Camels

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Junior setter Casey Curran filled up the box score with 25 assists, four digs, one ace, one block and one kill to highlight play for visiting North Carolina Central University in a 3-0 non-conference volleyball loss at Campbell University on Tuesday evening in Gore Arena.

The Camels (9-12) posted a .289 hitting percentage in winning their fourth straight match by set scores of 25-21, 25-11 and 25-16. The Lady Eagles (3-20) have suffered four consecutive setbacks.

Curran has posted 20-plus assists for a seventh straight outing with majority of her 25 assists going to junior Kelsey Murphy and freshman Sydney Sumner, who had 16 combined kills. Murphy pounded down a team-high nine kills and led the Lady Eagles with eight digs to flirt with a double-double. Sumner added seven kills and six digs.

Senior Kelly Rossip and freshman Sydney Richardson added four and three kills, respectively. Rossip tallied two block assists.

Freshman Jessica Stocking and junior Jenny Tait led the Camels with 13.5 points apiece. Stocking ripped a match-high 12 kills and Tait was strong on all facets of the game with seven kills, three aces and five blocks (two solo, three assists).

Senior libero Mary Crema topped all players with 20 digs. Junior Rebecca Ramirez orchestrated the hot-hitting Campbell attack with 26 assists.

NCCU returns to MEAC Southern Division play with a road match at rival North Carolina A&T State University on Friday at 7 p.m.

Masoe Records a Double-Double in SSU loss

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior setter Caitlynn Masoe recorded her first double-double of the season with 30 assists and 12 digs as Savannah State University volleyball team (0-25) fell to The Citadel (7-17) 3-1 (30-28, 11-25, 13-25, 18-25) on Tuesday at McAlister Fieldhouse.

The Long Beach, Calif., native also recorded three kills and had a .375 hitting percentage, while freshman outside hitters Makayla Tam and Chinenye Ofolide led the team with 13 kills each.  Tam added five digs and two assists, while Ofodile added a service ace and a block assist.

Junior setter Alexis Washington led the team with 14 digs and added a service ace and two assists, while junior middle blocker Gabrielle Nathaniel added 10 digs and five kills.  Senior middle blocker Christian Lyle added five blocks, which ranked tied for third most in school history for a four-set match. 

The Bulldogs were led by Moriah Smith with 18 kills, Rachel Keefer with 51 assists and Samantha Espy with 20 digs. Bailey Kernodle recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs.

The Lady Tigers return home to face its final non-conference opponent this season against Alabama State for “Dig Pink” on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gym before traveling to Florida to face Bethune-Cookman on Friday at 7 p.m. in Daytona Beach and Florida A&M on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Tallahassee.
