Cross Country Recap: October 16

Kiptoo and Walton pace Bethune-Cookman at USF Invitational

TAMPA – Bethune-Cookman’s Daniel Kiptoo and Xavior Walton finished in the top ten at the USF Invitational Friday.

Kiptoo, who entered Friday with victories in his last two meets, finished sixth with an 8K time of 26:11.5, followed by Walton in seventh in 26:12.3. 

USF’s Michael Babinec, the only runner to finish ahead of Kiptoo this season before Friday, won his final meet on his home course in 25.41.9, followed by Florida Gulf Coast in 25.50.6. Three Florida runners rounded out the top five, helping the Gators take the team 45-57 over Florida Gulf Coast.

Bethune-Cookman was eighth among the nine Division I teams, finishing ahead of Florida A&M, 176-235.

In the women’s race, Bethune-Cookman was ninth in the ten-team Division I race with 251 points. Florida Gulf Coast won with a team score of 52, followed by USF (78) and Florida A&M (79).

Deja Davis was the first Lady Wildcat in, finishing 31st with a 6K time of 23.26.1. Nyajock Pan was 62nd (25.45.2), followed by Alexus Harris (67th, 26:03.4); Nia Ruth (70th, 26:25.3); Zierrah Martin (78th ,27:03.4) and Julia Porter-Mills (89th 28:34).

This was the final meet for Bethune-Cookman before the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships November 13 at Salisbury, Md.

Coward, Nicely Lead NCCU at Wake Forest Cross Country Invitational

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – Junior Gregory Coward and sophomore Shania Nicely topped North Carolina Central University men’s and women’s cross country teams during the Wake Forest University Invitational on Friday at Beeson Park in Kernersville, North Carolina.

Coward placed 125th in a field of 174 runners with a time of 28:02.79 on the 8k-course. Sophomore Jedrek Higgins was the next Eagle to finish, crossing the line in 149th place with a time of 29:25.23. Junior Deandre James placed 153rd in 30:14.43, followed by junior Victor Dunbar in 161st place in 31:47.05.

As a team, the NCCU men placed 15th out of 18 teams.

Nicely finished in 154th place out of 173 competitors with a time of 28:16.84 on the 6k-course. Senior Christa Landy placed 158th with a time of 31:10.45, followed by sophomore Lovasia Thomas in 160th place in 31:39.18 and freshman Jaleesa Smoot in 162nd place in 32:25.32.

The NCCU women finished in 17th place in the team standings.

Up next, NCCU travels to Dover, Delaware for the MEAC Championships on Oct. 31.

Kipkosgei was top FAMU finisher, while Chelelgo wins USF Invitational

TAMPA, Fla. – The FAMU Men’s Cross Country team put in a valiant effort in last Friday’s USF Cross Country Invitational on the USF Golf Course, placing ninth overall, with two Rattlers finishing in the Top 50 individual standings.

Thirteen teams were in competition at the event, nine from the Division One ranks, with the University of Florida finishing first.

Dennis Kipkosgei, was the top Rattler finisher in 27:46.30, followed by Jeremy Fritz in 29:14.40, to make the Top 50 overall.

Also competing for the Orange and Green were Thomas Howell (29:54.20); James Oyetunji (30:28.90) and Jairrin Dickens (30:48.10).

The FAMU Women’s Cross Country team was in fine form in their final event before the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships Friday, finishing third among 12 teams in the USF Invitational on the USF Golf Course.

Leading the way as she has all season was senior Cynthia Chelelgo, whose 21:50.70 team was good for first overall among individual runners.

Chelelgio was one of four FAMU runners to place in the Top 20, a group which featured-Judith Kibbi, (7th) 22:16.30; Effiey Kosge (17th), 22:55.80, and Fridah Limo (19th), 22:57.30

The 2015 MEAC Championships will be Saturday, October 31 in Dover, Delaware.
