Volleyball Recap: October 11

Murphy Posts Double-Double in Clash of League’s Top Two Hitters

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Junior Kelsey Murphy and senior Kelly Rossip tallied a combined 23 kills for visiting North Carolina Central University in a 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women’s volleyball loss at Bethune-Cookman University Sunday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium.

The Wildcats (8-12 Overall, 5-0) remains in first place in the Southern Division with the 25-11, 25-21, 25-14 sweep. The Lady Eagles (3-18, 2-3) slips below .500 in league play for the first time this season.

Murphy registered her fifth double-double of the season with a match-high 13 kills and a team-best 10 digs. Rossip tacked on 10 kills on a .348 hitting percentage as the duo combined for 23 of the Lady Eagles 27 kills. Rossip also had two blocks, including one solo.

Freshman Whitney White was the only other NCCU player to record a kill with four spikes.

Senior Marilyn Sherbondy matched Murphy with 10 digs. Junior Casey Curran tallied 25 assists. Curran and freshman Bree Simmons provided NCCU’s only two aces. Curran and White each supplied two block assists.

Delicia Pierre, who entered the weekend as the league’s top attacker, added to her strong senior season with 10 kills, eight digs, two aces and three blocks (one solo). Sophomore Rakaya Neely notched a team-best 11 kills. Senior setter Hazel Ortiz-Rosado contributed 30 assists and junior Ajsha Davis chipped in 11 digs.

NCCU hosts non-conference Gardner-Webb University in its “Dig Pink/Breast Cancer Awareness” match on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Howard sweeps past Norfolk State

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Khaila Donaldson finished with a match-high 11 kills to lead Howard to a 3-0 win over the Norfolk State volleyball team on Sunday afternoon at Burr Gymnasium.
 
The first-place Bison earned the sweep by winning 25-15, 25-20 and 25-19. They improved their MEAC record to 5-1, remaining one of three teams in the Northern Division with just one loss. Howard also ran its overall record to 8-13.
 
Junior Dominique Parker hit .318 with nine kills and two blocks to lead the Spartans (1-15 overall, 0-3 MEAC). Senior Angie Darcus added eight kills for an NSU squad that hit .028 compared to a .241 attack percentage for Howard.

Darcy Moore finished with 24 assists and junior Alex Irizarry led the Spartans with 11 digs.
 
NSU returns home to face Hampton in the Battle of the Bay next Friday at 6 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.
