NCCU Softball Volunteers at Teen Outreach Program

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Lady Eagles took a little time away from the diamond and classroom to introduce a group of boys and girls to softball at one of Raleigh’s Teen Outreach Programs Monday afternoon at the John Chavis Community Center.

The North Carolina Central University fastpitch softball players were able to speak to local teens about the challenges of being a college student-athlete. After about 45 minutes of discussion, the Lady Eagles had the opportunity to take the boys and girls to the gym to break down some throwing and pitching mechanics and provide a breakdown on what they do day-to-day to prepare for practice and games.

“Our young ladies were given the chance to introduce those teens to another sport other than basketball and football,” said NCCU head softball coach Theresa Stephens. “They also had the opportunity to speak with the boys and girls individually and in small groups, as well as sign autographed balls for the kids to take home with them.”

TOP is a free, recreation-based, after-school program for teens ages 12-18 that operates at eight different community centers across Raleigh. Activities include athletics, the arts, recreational games, field trips, adventure programs, skill building sessions and more.

The goal of the program is to provide a consistent positive alternative to negative behaviors by providing recreational opportunities for teenagers. The program also addresses the issues affecting teens, their community and their environment with understanding and compassion and helping teens learn to become contributing members of the Raleigh community.
