LEGENDARY COACH JARVIS TO SPEAK AT LIFE SKILLS EVENT

HAMPTON, Va. – Mike Jarvis, basketball coach, life coach, author, speaker, and television analyst, will speak on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center as part of the Department of Athletics’ Black History Programming.

The general campus population is also invited to attend.

In 25 seasons as a Div. I men’s basketball coach, Jarvis compiled a record of 583-326, and he took three different schools – Boston University, George Washington, and St. John’s – to the NCAA Tournament. He is one of just eight coaches to win at least 100 games at three difference schools, and Jarvis is the only coach to accomplish that feat along with winning at least 100 games at the high school level.

At Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, Jarvis guided his alma mater to three straight state titles (1979-81), while amassing a record of 77-1. He was a three-time Massachusetts High School Coach of the Year, and among the players he coached was future Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing.

Jarvis is Boston University’s all-time winningest coach, surpassing Rick Pitino with 101 wins.

He was named National Coach of the Year in 1998 – his first season at St. John’s – after leading the team to a 28-9 record and a trip to the Elite Eight.

Jarvis earned his undergraduate degree from Northeastern in 1968 and received his Master’s in education from Boston University in 1984. In 1997, Jarvis was elected president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

After his time at St. John’s, Jarvis spent time as a college basketball analyst for ESPN and a writer for Yahoo! Sports. He also co-authored his first book, Skills For Life, as well as writing his first faith tract called Meet My Head Coach.

In 2008, Jarvis led Florida Atlantic to its first-ever Sun Belt Conference regular-season title and a berth in the NIT. He was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year in the process, and he came Florida Atlantic’s all-time winningest coach during the 2013-14 season.

Jarvis is currently writing a second book, Everybody Needs a Head Coach, and he also works as a college basketball analyst for Fox Sports. In addition, Jarvis is a motivational speaker and life coach.

Jarvis and his wife Connie live in Boca Raton, Fla. They had a son, Mike II, and a daughter, Dana Shaiyen, as well as five grandchildren.
