DSU Runs Out of Gas Down the Stretch to Fall 66-59 at NCCU

Durham, N.C. - Monday afternoon, the Delaware State women's basketball team (3-15, 1-5 MEAC) came up short on the road to the North Carolina Central Eagles (5-15, 3-5 MEAC), 66-59, despite three Hornets scoring in double figures.

With this loss, DSU dropped its fourth in a row, whereas the Eagles recorded their second straight win for the first time this season.

For DSU, forward Amber Bogard finished with a team-high 18 points (7-of-16), eight rebounds and two blocks, while guard Mikah Aldridge poured in 17 points (7-of-17).  Aldridge also extended her streak of hitting a 3-pointer to 13 games with a 3-for-8 (.375) effort.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will continue their four-game road swing this Saturday (2 p.m.) against South Carolina State.

Tate-DeFreitas’ Career Effort Leads In Blowout Win

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – A career day from sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led the Hampton University women’s basketball team to an 88-53 win over South Carolina State on Monday at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) dropped a career-high 37 points on 14-for-29 shooting and six 3-pointers, racking up her fourth career 30-point effort – and her second this season. She eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career in the process, becoming the 26th player in program history to do so.

The Lady Pirates will be in Norfolk, Va. on Saturday to take on Norfolk State at 4 p.m.

Late FTs Help SSU Edge NSU, 56-54

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Jasmine Norman broke a tie by making two free throws with 16 seconds left, and Norfolk State guard Rae Corbo missed a potential tying jumper at the final buzzer as the Spartans fell to host Savannah State, 56-54, on Monday night at Tiger Arena.

The loss was the second in a row for the Spartans (6-13, 5-3 MEAC), who were led by Kayla Roberts' 13 points.

Roberts, with 13 points, was the only Spartan in double figures. Jazamine Gray added eight points and eight assists. Amber Brown had a team-high nine rebounds and Roberts grabbed seven. Roberts and Gray both had three steals.

The Spartans return home for their next three games, starting with the Battle of the Bay against rival Hampton at 4 p.m. Saturday at Echols Hall.

@BCUWBB Runs Past Howard, 61-53

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Kailyn Williams posted a double-double effort of 12 points and 14 rebounds as Bethune-Cookman defeated Howard, 61-53, in MEAC women’s basketball action inside Moore Gymnasium on Monday evening. For the Wildcats, the win marked their fourth consecutive in league play.

The Lady Wildcats were led in the scoring column by Jasmine Knowles with 15 points, followed by Hollis with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Hollis added two assists, two blocks and three steals. Kailyn Williams added 12 points and 14 boards, posting a game-high six blocks and two steals. Also reaching double-figures was Cooper with 10 points, four assists and two steals.

Bethune-Cookman returns to the hardwood Saturday, Jan. 31, traveling to Florida A&M for a MEAC showdown scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Antilla, Jones Spark Lady Rattlers Past UMES, 64-54

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The newcomer trio of Olivia Antilla, Alicia Jones and Khaderja Young combined for 49 points Monday night to lead the FAMU Women’s Basketball team to their second straight win, a 64-54 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore at the Al Lawson Center.

Antilla  led FAMU with 22 points knocking down eight of 13 floor shots, including a pair of three-pointers, while Jones  added 15 points, cashing in a trio of three-pointers, and Young chipped in with 12 points.

WHAT’S NEXT: FAMU aims to close this three-game homestand 3-0 on Saturday, as they host archrival Bethune-Cookman ina 1:00 p.m. matinee affair at the Lawson Center.
