Bethune-Cookman Delivers Wire-to-Wire Victory Over Morgan State, 55-48
BALTIMORE, Md. - The Lady Wildcats (6-12, 3-3 MEAC) made it 2-for-2 on the trip to Baltimore, jumping out early on Morgan State (6-12, 3-3 MEAC) and holding the advantage throughout to top the Lady Bears, 55-48, Monday afternoon at Talmadge L. Hill Field House.
Kendra Cooper led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 62.5 percent from the field, 80 percent from the perimeter and 100 percent from the line for her 13th double-figure scoring game of the year. In addition, she logged a career-high seven (7) rebounds.
For the second time in a week, Kailyn Williams pressed close to earning a triple-double, logging 12 points, 13 rebounds and eight (8) blocks in the contest, shooting 45.4 percent on the day. Knowles had a banner day at point guard, scoring 11 of her own on 44.4 percent shooting, but also dishing out seven (7) assists to match her career high.
The Lady Wildcats return to Richard V. Moore Gymnasium on a win streak, taking on a home set with Maryland Eastern Shore and Howard next week.

Too Many Turnovers in Lady Eagles’ Loss at Hampton
HAMPTON, Va. - North Carolina Central University committed as many turnovers as it scored points on Monday night against the top team in the MEAC, resulting in a 75-36 loss to Hampton University at the HU Convocation Center.
NCCU’s 36 turnovers are the most since Dec. 30, 2011, when the Lady Eagles had 36 miscues at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Hampton (9-9, 5-0 MEAC) received a game-high 30 points from Malia Tate-DeFreitas, the conference’s second-leading scorer, who also had six of her team’s 18 steals.
The Lady Eagles return to the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. against Coppin State inside McDougald-McLendon Gym.

DSU Ousted at Home by Savannah State, 76-45
Dover, Del. - In its final contest of a season-long three-game homestand, the Delaware State women's basketball team (3-13, 1-3 MEAC) faced an uphill climb early and often Monday evening against the Savannah State Tigers (9-9, 4-2 MEAC), suffering a 76-45 defeat.
With this loss, the Lady Hornets dropped their second straight game, while SSU bounced back from a double-digit loss at UMES on Saturday to win four out of its last five.
For DSU, forward Tierra Hawkins, who was named MEAC Player of the Week earlier in the day, led the way with 16 points (7-of-18). Unfortunately, she saw her streak of four straight games with a double-double snapped with a team-high nine rebounds. Aldridge slowed down considerably after a strong to finish with just 14 points (3-of-9), as the only other Hornet to score in double figures.
Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will tipoff a four-game road swing this Saturday (2 p.m.) against North Carolina A&T.

Spartans Rally Twice, Top N.C. A&T 76-75 in OT
NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore guard Koryn Lawrence scored the go-ahead basket on a layup with 14 seconds left in overtime, and North Carolina A&T’s Debbie Smith missed a potential winning field goal with seven seconds remaining as the Spartan women’s basketball team rallied for a dramatic 76-75 victory over the Aggies on Monday night at Echols Hall.
The Spartans (6-11, 5-1 MEAC) trailed by as many as 19 early in the second half, but rallied to force overtime. NSU trailed by as many as four in the extra session before rallying again behind the play of Corbo, who had a game-high 30 points, and Lawrence, who matched her career high with 23. Their heroics gave their Spartans their fourth straight win, the program’s first four-game winning streak since 2004-05, and helped NSU match the 1999-2000 team for the best six-game MEAC start in school history.
Kayla Roberts finished with her fourth double-double of the year, with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Nia Roberts added eight rebounds and three blocks.

Lady Hawks Come Up Shorts Against South Carolina State
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – In their closest game of the season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team came up short as they fell to the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs, 64-59, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 6-9 (3-2 MEAC) on the season whereas South Carolina State moved to 10-7 (3-3 MEAC) overall.
UMES held the lead for more than 21 minutes in the contest while shooting over 44-percent (23-of-52) from the field. Furthermore, the Lady Hawks outrebounded South Carolina State, 41-35. Maryland Eastern Shore was led by newcomers Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) and Shauntesha Bryant (Syracuse, N.Y.). Subritzky had a team-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 50-percent (3-of-6) from beyond the arc. Bryant had another solid outing as she was a board shy from her first career double-double. The New York-native ended her night registering 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds in the loss.
For the Lady Bulldogs, Amber Howard was the lone player to reach double-figures. Howard finished with 17 points on 5-of-10 from downtown.
On Jan. 24, the Lady Hawks travel south to Daytona Beach, Fla. to face the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats inside Moore Gymnasium. Game-time is slate for 2 p.m.

Coppin Defeats FAMU
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Coppin State women’s basketball team welcomed the sweet taste of victory in a 70-65 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win over Florida A&M Monday night in the Physical Education Complex.
The Eagles (3-12 overall, 2-2 MEAC) were hitting on all cylinders in the second half, especially when freshman guard Candice Beverly came off the bench.
Beverly was undoubtedly the spark that Coppin State needed as it stormed back from a 10-point deficit in the final 10 minutes, 28 seconds for a win to remember. In 13 minutes, she scored a career-high seven points, pulled down three rebounds and dished three assists.
Coppin State begins its three-game MEAC road trip against North Carolina Central on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Durham. The Eagles will also visit North Carolina A&T and Maryland-Eastern Shore.
