Bethune-Cookman Shows Willpower in Holding Off Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Lady Wildcats scrapped out a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory on the road, Saturday (Jan. 17) afternoon at the Physical Education Complex, pulling away from Coppin State in the second half, and holding off the Eagles’ final surge to win 61-58.

Kendra Cooper was the anchor for the Lady Wildcats, putting up 20 points, including six (6) hits from beyond the arc. Cooper scored in double-figures for the 12th time this season, rising to 20 points for the fourth time.

The Lady Wildcats remain in the Charm City on this road swing, taking on Morgan State on Monday at 2 p.m. The Lady Bears (6-11, 3-2 MEAC) defeated Florida A&M, 57-50.

Lady Pirates Knock Off PreSeason Favorite Aggies 

HAMPTON, Va. – In a defensive struggle reminiscent of last season’s matchup, the Hampton University women’s basketball team beat preseason conference favorite North Carolina A&T 54-48 at the HU Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates (8-9, 4-0 MEAC) picked up their third straight win overall, their fifth straight over the Aggies, and their 53rd straight against conference foes (including tournament teams).

The Aggies (9-9, 2-3 MEAC) fell to under .500 in conference play.

Sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led the Lady Pirates with 26 points – her 11th 20-point effort of the season – going 11-for-21 from the floor and hitting three of her five 3-pointers. She also grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

Ross led North Carolina A&T with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Monday, hosting North Carolina Central at 6 p.m.

Shorthanded Lady Hornets Fall Short at Home to SCSU, 65-60

(Dover, Del.) - Saturday afternoon, the Delaware State women's basketball team (3-12, 1-2 MEAC) saw its brief two-game winning streak snapped by way of a 65-60 home loss to the visiting South Carolina State Bulldogs (9-7, 2-3 MEAC), despite four players scoring in double figures, led by guard Mikah Aldridge's career-high 18 points (6-of-12).

With this loss, Delaware State was denied its first three-game winning streak in two seasons, in addition to failing to beat SCSU for the first time since coming away with a 55-53 victory at home in 2012.

For Delaware State, forward Tierra Hawkins tallied her fourth straight double-double with 10 points (4-of-8) and a game-high 13 rebounds, while N’Kayah Kersey (12) and guard Aliah Stinnett (10) poured in season-highs, respectively.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will wrap up their season-long three-game homestand Monday night (5:30 p.m.) against Savannah State.

Lady Hawks Tame Savannah State

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Entering another early conference test, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team prevailed to victory over the Savannah State Lady Tigers, 61-50, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. With the win, the Lady Hawks improved to 6-8 (3-1 MEAC) on the season while Savannah State dropped to 7-9 (2-2 MEAC) overall.

A team effort contributed to the victory as all eight Lady Hawks scored in the game, led by senior guards Jessica Long and Shawnee Sweeney. Long had a game-high 14 points, five boards and three assists. For the Virginia-native, she recorded 10 points while shooting 40-percent (2-of-5) from beyond the arc.

For the Lady Tigers, Norman and Ezinne Kalu each had 13 points before fouling out. Kalu, MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, added four boards and a game-high six steals in the loss.

This Monday (1/19), the Lady Hawks stay home as the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs come to town. Game-time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Corbo's 29 Send NSU to 4-1 MEAC Start

NORFOLK, Va. - Senior guard Rae Corbo scored 29 points for the second game in a row, leading Norfolk State to its third straight win with a convincing 82-58 victory over North Carolina Central on Saturday evening at Echols Hall.

The win puts the Spartans at 5-11 overall, 4-1 in the MEAC heading into Monday's game with North Carolina A&T. The 4-1 MEAC start is the Spartans' best since 2001-02, when NSU won the MEAC title.

NSU established season highs in points (82), field goals (31) and field goal percentage (47.7) in their most lopsided victory of the season. Each of NSU's wins in its current three-game winning streak has come by at least 13 points.

The Spartans host N.C. A&T, the preseason MEAC favorite, at 6 p.m. on Monday.
