Corbo, Defense Carry NSU over BCU 53-40
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Rae Corbo scored 29 points and Norfolk State's stifling defense helped the Spartans improve to 3-1 in MEAC play with a 53-40 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Monday night at Moore Gymnasium.
NSU is now on a two-game winning streak for the first time this season and has started 3-1 in MEAC competition for the second straight year. The Spartans (4-11) did it thanks to Corbo, who tallied the second-highest scoring output of her career, and a defense which allowed season lows of 40 points and 23.8 percent shooting.
The 40 points B-CU scored are tied for the most NSU has ever allowed in a MEAC game. The Wildcats also held the previous low mark from a 67-40 loss to the Spartans on March 2, 2013.
Corbo shot 8-of-19 from the floor and 13-of-14 from the free-throw line. Her 13 made free throws are the fifth-most in a game in school history
Monday's win, coupled with Saturday's win at Florida A&M, gave the Spartans their first road sweep of the MEAC's Florida-based schools since the 1999-2000 season.
The Spartans return home for their next two games, beginning with a 4 p.m. matchup Saturday against North Carolina Central.
