MEAC VOLLEYBALL ANNOUNCES WEEKLY HONORS

NORFOLK, Va., September 8, 2014 – Hampton senior Vendula Strakova was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week. Coppin State’s Bailee Jackson earned the Rookie of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday.

Strakova (RS, 6-0, Sr., Brno, Czech Republic) was named the James Madison University Invitational Tournament MVP while helping the Lady Pirates win a share of the tournament title. Strakova tallied 92 kills, while hitting .342, and set a new school record for kills in a four-set match (32) win against George Washington.

Jackson (OH, 5-9, Fr., Ames, Iowa) led the Lady Eagles with 51 digs in games against La Salle, Towson, and Saint Peters. Jackson recorded a career-high 24 digs to help defeat Saint Peters. She also had 10 assists and one ace for the week.

Other Top Performers: 

Khaila Donaldson (Howard) was named to the Liberty All-Tournament Team, while notching her third double-double of 13 kills and 18 digs on the season against UNC-Greensboro.

Carmen Fernandez (MSU) registered 113 assists, 17 digs, seven kills, and two blocks in three matches over the weekend.

Kirstin Fink (UMES) named to the Southern Utah All-Tournament Team with 10 digs and 10 assists against Savannah State.

Jessica Johnson (NSU) logged 28 kills in games against Tennessee Tech, East Carolina, and UNC-Wilmington.

Rakaya Neely (B-CU) had five kills, one dig, and one block in a game against North Florida.

Cindy Okpegbue (CSU) was selected to the Towson All-Tournament Team after averaging 4.33 kills in three matches.

Hazel Ortiz Rosado (B-CU) recorded 87 assists, 20 kills, and seven aces in four matches over the weekend.

Ashley Smith (UMES) registered a double-double of 16 digs and 11 kills against UC Riverside.

Clarke Tyler (NSU) charted 10 kills, one ace, and one dig in a game against Tennessee Tech.

Melanie Williams (SCSU) tallied 45 assists, 27 digs, and one kill in matches against Buffalo, Florida International, and South Florida.
