Coppin State volleyball stages rally to remember to beat Saint Peter’s
TOWSON, Md. – During a key moment in the decisive fifth set against Saint Peter’s, Coppin State head volleyball coach Ashley Preston told Ariel Richard “Take control. This is your game!”
Did she ever.
Richard responded to Preston’s passionate plea with an immediate kill to give Coppin State a one-point lead it never relinquished. A few minutes later, Richard delivered a match-ending kill to put the cherry on top of a memorable rally for the Coppin State volleyball team.
After dropping the first two sets, Coppin State displayed tremendous heart and poise to outlast Saint Peter’s, 3-2, at the SECU Arena in its final match of the two-day Towson Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Eagles claimed the match 25-27, 20-25, 25-19, 26-24, 15-11.

University of Buffalo Downs SC State 3-0
TAMPA, Fla. – Tahleia Bishop and Cassie Shado each had 10 kills to lead the University of Buffalo women’s volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-19) win at the University of South Florida Invitational.
SC State (0-5) got out to a fast start and took a commanding 7-1 lead after a UB ball handling error. The Bulls regained their composure and got within one, 9-8, after a kill by Akeila Lain.
The Lady Bulldogs managed to hold on to the lead until back-to-back kills by Lain put UB up 16-15. The Bulls then went on a 9-3 run to take the set.
The Bulls came out focused in the second set and won it before the Lady Bulldogs could get in double digits.

Lady Bears Sweep Tennessee Tech In Day 2 Of East Carolina Invitational
GREENVILLE, N.C. (Sept. 6, 2014)-Morgan State junior Carmen Fernandez recorded a double-double, finishing with a match-high 31 assists and adding 10 digs, as Morgan State handed Tennessee Tech a 3-0 non-conference defeat in the East Carolina Invitational on Saturday morning at Minges Coliseum.
Fernandez, who also added a solo block and a service ace, finished the day with three kills on four attempts for a hitting percentage of .750. Arianna Hayden totaled a team-high 10 kills and chipped in with four digs and a team-high two blocks, both solos, while Evely Macedo tallied nine kills and eight digs for Morgan State, which improved to 1-1 in the tournament. Samantha Prescott had nine kills with four digs and Minja Rankov notched a match-high 15 digs.
The Golden Eagles (1-5) were led by Cody Dodd, who had a match-high 15 kills. Sharon Anderson finished with 25 assists and a team-high seven digs. Jordan Wachowiak notched a match-high eight blocks, including two solo, while Dodd and Kellie Williams finished with four and three blocks, respectively, as TTU held a 10.5 to 3.0 blocking advantage over Morgan State.
Morgan State (2-4) scored the first three points in the opening set, then gave up the next two, before putting together 11 consecutive points in part of a 15-2 spurt to take an 18-4 lead. The Lady Bears hold a 24-9 cushion, but the Golden Eagles would not go away quietly, scoring four straight points to pull within 24-13. Morgan State’s Shayna Hunt-Colon would finally end the match with a kill from the left side of the court for the 25-13 victory.

NSU Falls to UNC Wilmington, 3-0
GREENVILLE, N.C. – UNC Wilmington kept the Norfolk State volleyball team winless on the season with a 3-0 victory over the Spartans on Saturday afternoon in the East Carolina Invitational at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
The Spartans kept it close in the second and third sets, won by the Seahawks 25-22 and 25-23. UNC Wilmington started off the match with a 25-13 victory in the first set.
NSU (0-6) was led by junior Jessica Johnson, who tallied nine kills, and freshman Clarke Tyler, who contributed seven kills and hit .316.
Tyler and senior Jasmin Flowers, in her first match of the season, each had a pair of kills as NSU built an 8-7 lead in the second set. The Seahawks (5-1) turned that deficit into a 17-12 lead. The Spartans made a short run at the end before UNC Wilmington took a 2-0 lead into the break.
