Cross Country Recap: Sept. 20

First places aplenty for Hawks at Cappy Anderson Invitational

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Hosting its second cross country meet of the season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) had the challenging task of trying to improve on two straight first place finishes for the men and two straight second place finishes for the women.

They did just that, with the men capturing their third straight team win with 21 points and the women earning their first team victory with 37 points at the Cappy Anderson Invitational.

In addition, a pair of Hawks captured victory individually, and both for a second week in a row. Sophomore Khalil Rmidi Kinnini won the men’s 8K race with a time of 25:26.87 while fellow sophomore Barbora Blahutova placed first with a time of 18:33.06 in the women’s 5k event.

While the men did not capture all top five positions as they did in the first two meets, they captured five of the first seven spots to secure their first place finish. Freshman Nelson Kimutai placed second behind Kinnini for the third straight week as well with a time of 26:33.75. A time of 26:59.90 gave sophomore Derrick Cheruiyot a fifth place finish, and Mark Tuwie and Stanley Meli earned times of 27:10.87 and 27:49.13, respectively, good for sixth and seventh place.

After Blahutova, three more Lady Hawks earned top ten finishes. Sophomore Rachel Halmon finished sixth in the meet with a 19:37.32 time, followed by freshman Janice Lane who finished seventh with a time of 19:40.10. Junior Shantol Hemley placed ninth to round out the Lady Hawks in the top ten with a time of 19:48.94.

The Cappy Anderson Invitational concludes the home schedule for the UMES cross country season. In October, the Hawks will travel to two meets in Dover before going back again in November for the MEAC Championships.
