ELON, N.C. – The North Carolina A&T volleyball team was competitive against Elon for two sets but a rapid run by the Phoenix in the third set led to a sweep of the Aggies, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-12) Wednesday evening in a non-conference match at Alumni Gym.
Junior Brooke Stamnes led the way for A&T with eight kills, recording six of them in the first set on 11 attacks to hit .545 to open the match. Sophomore Liz Martino added 17 assists while junior Ashley Johnson tallied 13 digs.

The local rivals opened the match in a 10-10 tie. From that point, Elon used a 10-4 rally to stretch the lead to 20-14. A&T cut the lead to 20-16 with a kill from Stamnes and an Elon error. Kills from Stamnes and sophomore Jade Boone sliced the Aggies’ deficit to 22-19 but the Phoenix recorded the next three points for the first set win.
In the second set, A&T led 9-8 until an error tied the game at 9. Both teams took turns holding the lead but it was Stamnes again who registered a kill from Martino to deadlock the set at 16.
