CSU Women's Cross Country Team Opens Season with Fifth-Place Finish

SMYRNA, Del. - On the women’s side, Kesha Medas-King and Kadeem Curtis were top 20 finishers for Coppin State. Medas-King was 10th overall (19:46.6) and Curtis was 20th (21:43.7). This was the first meet of the season for the women, who finished fifth overall as a team.

Other finishers on the five-kilometer course for the Eagles were Miriam Ekwuru (23:16.8), Ashley Bacote (25:22.2), Shawdae Frederick (25:34.4) and Danielle Baker (30:31.0).

Both teams return to action next weekend in different meets. The Coppin State men will run in the Towson Invitational at Oregon Ridge Park on Friday afternoon beginning at 4:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the women will compete in the Cappie Anderson Invitational at UMES Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

Lady Bears Capture Hornet Invitational; Three Runners Set Personal-Bests

DOVER, Del. (Sept. 15, 2014) - The Morgan State women’s cross country team captured its second consecutive team title, following Saturday’s win at the DSU Hornet Invitational 5k meet, hosted by Delaware State.

Led by their freshman sensation, Karen Escobedo, the Lady Bears won the event with a total of 27 points. Escobedo, continued her dominance as Morgan State’s top runner, finishing with a personal-best time of 18:06.8 to place second overall out of 58 runners.

Ishakeema Swain placed third and also ran a personal-best time of 18:29.3, while Jada Boyd ran a time of 18:53.5 to set a personal-best and placed fourth.

Barbora Blahutova of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) won the individual title in a time of 18:03.2. As a team UMES placed second behind Morgan State with 36 points, and host Delaware State placed third with 77 points. Wesley (124 points) finished fourth, followed by Coppin State (136 points) and the University of the District of Columbia (152 points).

COWARD TOPS NCCU AT ELON CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL

DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomore Gregory Coward posted the top performance for North Carolina Central University during the Elon Invitational by placing 16th in a field of 29 runners on a rainy Saturday.

Coward recorded a time of 28 minutes, 49 seconds on the 8k course as the first Eagle to cross the finish line. 

Jedrek Higgins (31:59) placed 23rd for NCCU, followed by Deondre James (33:00) in 24th, Orane Morais (33:19) in 25th, Kevin Vincent (33:28) in 26th, Victor Dunbar (34:18) in 27th, and Brett Boykin-Roach (35:44) in 29th.

As a team, the NCCU men placed fourth behind Elon, North Carolina A&T and Lenoir Rhyne.

The NCCU women were topped by senior Amber Brooks, who placed 19th among 32 runners with a time of 21:28 on the 5k course. Syrita Hunt (24:29) placed 27th for the Lady Eagles, followed by Shania Nicely (24:46) in 28th, Christa Landy (26:47) in 29th, Lavasia Thomas (31:02) in 30th, and Darlene Girardeau (31:47) in 31st.

As a team, the NCCU women placed fourth in the four-team competition.
