NORFOLK, Va. – With preseason practice in full swing and less than 10 days remaining from the season opener, interim head coach Brandon Duvall will have extra help in getting the Spartans ready for the 2014 campaign. The program recently hired Katy Buck Moreno to join the volleyball staff as a part-time assistant coach.
“Katy brings a lot of playing experience, and the fact she is a recent graduate will be very valuable to our current players,” said interim head coach Brandon Duvall. “She was her team’s go-to-player and an academic All-American on top of that. We look forward to her sharing the experiences of finding the right mindset for and playing in big matches, as well as balancing the academic side of things.”
Buck Moreno joined NSU after serving as an assistant coach at Mount de Sales Academy in Catonsville, Md., during the 2013 season. Prior to starting her coaching career there, she was a standout volleyball player at Towson.
She was named the CAA Player of the Year in 2011 during her sophomore season and also earned AVCA East Region honorable mention that year. Buck Moreno was named to the CAA All-Rookie team in 2010 and to the All-CAA first team in both 2011 and ’12.
She finished her career with more than 1,100 kills and 800 digs in just three seasons.
An outstanding student-athlete, Buck Moreno was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team in 2011 and ’12, and to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® first team in 2012. She was one of just six players in Division I volleyball to earn that honor.
Buck Moreno graduated from Towson in May of 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in biology.
