HAMPTON, Va. – Eugene Marshall Jr. has been named the Director of Athletics at Hampton University, where he will take over for Novelle Dickenson. Marshall brings well over two decades of athletic administration experience to the Pirates.
Two years ago, after conducting a national search, Hampton University appointed Dickenson, who was a political science professor, to the position of Director of Athletics. At that time, there was a need for increased focus on the area of student-athlete academic performance.
Dickenson, who had also served as Faculty Athletics Representative for the previous 12 years, went to work immediately and within two years, accomplished a great deal, assuring that all athletic teams were recording favorable Academic Progress Reports (APR).
Recently, Dickenson requested of the University’s Administration that he be allowed to return to Academic Affairs, where he has spent 36 years of his life in academics. Prior to his departure, Dickenson assisted with the search for the University’s next Director of Athletics.
Marshall will begin as the new Director of Athletics at Hampton University on July 1.
Most recently, Marshall was the interim deputy athletic director at Queens College, where he reported to the Assistant Vice President of Athletics and worked in an athletic program that boasted 18 teams.
Prior to that, Marshall spent two years as the Director of Athletics at Iona College, overseeing some of the Gaels’ most successful moments – including two NCAA Tournament appearances for men’s basketball, including the program’s first-ever at-large bid.
Men’s cross country, softball, and women’s water polo also earned NCAA berths during Marshall’s tenure, in which Iona also saw substantial improvements in its athletic facilities.
Prior to his time at Iona, Marshall spent more than a decade at Ramapo College in Mahwah, N.J., where he was Acting Director of Athletics in 2010-11. He was also the Director of Athletics at Ramapo from 1998-2005, and from 1998-04, he served as the school’s head women’s basketball coach.
Between stints at Ramapo, Marshall was the Deputy Director of Athletics at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. from 2005-10. Marshall spent 19 years as Head Coach; 11 years as Men’s coach at Pratt and 8 years as Women's coach at both College of Staten Island and Ramapo College.
As athletic director and head women's basketball coach at the College of Staten Island, N.Y., he oversaw 10 intercollegiate athletic programs and the school's intramural and recreation activities. He also managed the college's new outdoor athletic fields and courts, as well as its state-of-the-art indoor sports complex.
As head coach in 1996, Marshall led the women's basketball team to the school's third CUNY Tournament championship and first-ever appearance in the NCAA Women's Tournament, while leading the nation in Division III total defense (45.5 points per game) and field goal percentage defense (.300).
Before his tenure at CSI, Marshall spent 11 years at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he filled a number of roles, including director of athletics; director of intramurals and recreation; coordinator of special events and conference services; interim director of student activities and orientation; Pratt Benjamin Banneker Academy coordinator; special advisor to the president for multi-cultural affairs; head women's volleyball coach; and head men's basketball coach.
A 1981 graduate of Northeastern University, Marshall earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. He later completed his Master’s degree in sports leadership.
While an undergraduate at Northeastern, Marshall was a member of the Huskies' men's basketball team under former UConn head coach and Basketball Hall of Famer Jim Calhoun. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater.
