HAMPTON, Va. – Recently-graduated Hampton University volleyball player Petra Parros is one of nearly 450 total student-athletes to be nominated for the NCAA’s Woman of the Year award.
Parros was among 60 volleyball players to be nominated.
In addition, Parros, who is in the midst of completing her 5-year MBA, was named the recipient of the MEAC’s Post-Graduate Scholarship. She received her bachelor’s degree in business administration this past May, graduating Cum Laude.
Parros hit .241 this past season as the Lady Pirates won 19 matches and their first-ever MEAC championship, averaging 1.24 kills per set to go along with her 64.0 total blocks on the season. She had a career-high 17 kills against Murray State on Aug. 31, hitting .571.
In total, 446 student-athletes were nominated across all three levels, with over 205 nominees in Division I.
The NCAA encourages each member school to honor its top graduating female student-athletes each year by submitting their names for consideration for the Woman of the Year award.
Each conference then selects up to two women from the nominees to represent the conference. The Woman of the Year selection committee selects the top 30 honorees – 10 from each division – from the conference nominees.
From among those 30 candidates, the selection committee determines the top three in each division and announces the top nine finalists in September. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics will then vote from among the finalists to determine the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year.
The top 30 honorees will be honored, and the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year winner will be announced, at the annual ceremony in Indianapolis, Ind. on Sunday, Oct. 19.
