B-CU Softball Shut Out Coppin State in Open Game

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Kelsey Rodney drove in three runs, and Sabrina Anguiano and Shanel Tolbert combined on the shutout as Bethune-Cookman downed Coppin State 6-0 in its MEAC tournament opener Thursday at Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

The Wildcats (23-29) will meet the Hampton-Savannah State winner, Thursday at 7 p.m. Coppin State (12-26) plays the Hampton-Savannah State loser at 4:30 p.m.

Bailey Conner added a two-run single in the Wildcats’ three-run third inning after Rodney drove in her first run when she was hit by a pitch.

In the fourth, Breanna Chavez scored her second run of the game on an error, then Rodney brought in Wanda Darby and Calesha Shelley to make it a 6-0 game.

Shelley, named a Second Team All-Conference selection early Thursday, also scored two runs for the Wildcats.

Anguiano, a freshman, scattered seven hits over her five innings, walking none and striking out three. Tolbert struck out two in her two innings. It was Anguiano’s second shutout of the season.
