Several UMES Student-Athletes Earn Honors and Graduate Degrees

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Last Friday, University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) witnessed nearly 500 students earning their degrees after listening to an inspiring speech from guest speaker, Congressman John Lewis. Among the graduates, several current and former student-athletes were being recognized for the academic accomplishments.
 
 
From the UMES School of Graduate Studies, Rayna Brown, a former women's basketball student-athlete, received her Master of Education in Counselor Education while former men's basketball standout Joshua Bright earned his Master of Science in Criminology & Criminal Justice. Martha Perez-Schmitz, a three-time National Champion in bowling, was awarded a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling.  Jeremiah Hicks, a former jumper in track and field, earned his Doctorate of Pharmacy.
 
During the graduation ceremonies, nine student-athletes graduated with honors. Women's Bowling's Megan Buja, Women's Basketball's Breonna Evans, and Women's Volleyball's Jingqiao Li each graduated with Summa Cum Laude after cumulating a grade-point-average of 3.700 to 4.000. Women's Softball's Carmen Frazier and Men's Tennis' Wayne Heath finished between a 3.500 and 3.699 grade-point-average (GPA), earning them Magna Cum Laude. Others graduated Cum Laude after accumulating between a 3.300 and 3.499 GPA, which included Men's & Women's Track & Field's George Chandler and Jazmine Holland; Women's Basketball's Shanyce Stewart; and Women's Softball's Cherokee Williams.
