RALEIGH, N.C. – Bethune-Cookman University Men’s Golf sits 13th after the first two rounds of the NCAA Raleigh [N.C.] Regional concluded Friday evening, with the event hosted by NC State at Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Competing in the first NCAA Regional for men’s golf in school history and representing the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) for the first time in league history in golf postseason play, Bethune-Cookman had to wait an additional day to conclude the first two rounds of the tournament. Heavy rains forced Thursday’s opening round to be postponed, with play resuming Friday afternoon. For B-CU, 25 holes of golf was played over the course of eight hours as wet bunkers forced play to start at 12:30 p.m.
The Wildcats sit 13th in the field of 13, using two rounds of 296, turning in a two-round 592 (+24) on the day.
B-CU senior Rafael Abad (72-75=147, +3) leads the Wildcats in scoring after firing an even-par 72 round through his first 18 holes. Overall, Abad is tied for 52nd in the tournament standings.
Fellow senior Matthew McKnight (73-75=148, +4) sits behind Abad in a tie for 55th overall in the tournament field.
Emmanuel Petrich (74-76=150, +6) turned in two solid rounds and sits tied for 63rd, while MEAC individual champion Ryan Fricker (77-74=151, +7) is tied for 69th in the standings.
The final golfer for the Cats was sophomore Leon Fricker (80-72=152, +8), bouncing back from an 8-over-par opening round to register the team’s only other even-par performance aside from Abad on the day in his turnaround 18 holes.
Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) champion Georgia Tech (268-272=540, -28) leads all teams atop the standings, followed by Washington (278-278=556, -12) and Kentucky (281-279=560, -8) rounding out the top three schools.
ACC individual champion Ollie Schniederjans (66-68=134, -10) leads the individual field heading into the final round on Saturday.
Play resumes back at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on Saturday with teams teeing off at 8 a.m.
