SSU student-athletes participate in 184th commencement

SAVANNAH, Ga.  – Savannah State University held its 184th Graduation Commencement this past Saturday, May 10, on the grounds of T.A. Wright Stadium.

Joining the approximately 330 students being conferred associate, undergraduate and graduate degrees, were 28 student-athletes.

Receiving high honors were SSU softball’s Megan Uhrman (Summa Cum Laude), women’s golf’s Michelle Gifford (Summa Cum Laude), men’s golf’s William Proulx (Magna Cum Laude), and football’s Jake Durham (Magna Cum Laude).

Graduating with Cum Laude Honors were football players Rashaud Ferrell, Broderick Sellers, Sheldon Barnes, and Denzel Carter, as well as Asiha Williams (volleyball), Katerina Marroquin (cheerleading), and baseball’s Theodore Page, Ian Farris, and Todd Hagen. 

The commencement address was delivered by Assistant Secretary Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the current head of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs.

Thomas-Greenfield was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to her current office in August of 2013. Her office works on the development and management of U.S. policy toward sub-Saharan Africa. Her career includes stints as the U.S. Ambassador to Liberia, as well as postings in Switzerland, Pakistan, Kenya, Nigeria, The Gambia, and Jamaica.
