Coppin State knocks off Howard in MEAC match
BALTIMORE – In arguably the match of the season, the Coppin State men’s tennis team got crucial victories from Oleksiy Krylchuk and Reginald Robinson to defeat Howard, 5-2, in a riveting Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Eagles (3-8 overall, 2-1 MEAC) moved into third place in the conference. Coppin can finish no worse than third when the MEAC tournament commences next weekend in Sayre (S.C.). A win over Morgan State Friday in its regular season finale could create a three-way tie for first place.
All of the potential conference confusion came courtesy of Krylchuk at No. 1 singles and Robinson at No. 4 singles. They won tough matches to help the Eagles celebrate Senior Day in style. The day started with Krylchuk and Daniel Nino receiving a large frame that included a jersey and photos in a brief ceremony before the start of the match.
Krylchuk had an awesome day. With his dramatic 7-6, 6-2 victory, Krylchuk became the eighth Coppin State men’s tennis player to win 20 career singles matches. He is seventh all-time in tennis wins for the Eagles. He teamed with Nino to win 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. It was the final victory for the tandem on the sacred campus courts.
Robinson came through with a 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles to cement the Eagles victory. Also claiming winning decisions for Coppin State were Patrick Thomas, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5 singles and Roderick Peyton, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. Tre’Vonne Peyton and Thomas posted an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles that helped Coppin State win the coveted doubles point.
