Shelley records two hits as Bethune-Cookman falls to Savannay State
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Calesha Shelley had two hits and drove in two runs, but Bethune-Cookman dropped a 9-6 decision to Savannah State on Senior Day Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers (22-19 overall, 6-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division) scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead and added two in the seventh to deny the Wildcats (20-28,10-2) a sweep in the final home appearance.
Shelley’s two run-triple in the third gave B-CU a 5-4 lead. After the Tigers scored their runs, Kaitlin Alamprese led off the bottom half of the inning with Kaitlin Alamprese’s team-leading fourth home run of the season to close to 7-6, but that would be the final Wildcat run of the day.
B-CU took a 3-1 lead after the first inning, scoring all its runs without a hit. Shelley scored when Sabrina Anguiano was hit by a pitch, Kelsey Rodney scored on Melissa Berouty’s sacrifice fly and Bailey Conner on Wanda Darby’s bases-loaded walk.
Conner had two hits for the Wildcats, while Darby stole two bases.
Prior to the game, a Senior Day ceremony honored Rodney, pitcher Shanel Tolbert and manager Kenya Collins.
The Wildcats conclude the regular season with a three-game series at Florida A&M beginning next Saturday.

Lady Bears stump Lady Hawks in doubleheader
BALTIMORE - A day after rescheduling their contests versus Morgan State University (MSU), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team lost both games to the Lady Bears, 9-1 and 10-2, respectively.
With both setbacks, the Lady Hawks have fallen to 7-37 overall (4-9 MEAC), while MSU moved to 7-19 (4-10 MEAC) on the season.
In Game One, senior Chelsea Alston went 2-of-3 from the plate, including a double, while junior Morgan King and sophomore Trenece Nash also notched a hit in the loss.
After a scoreless first inning, King reached base on a single to centerfield, followed by sophomore Kaitlyn Hitch getting on with a fielder's choice. With runners on-base and no outs, Nash delivered a single up the-middle to give Maryland Eastern Shore the early advantage, 1-0; however, UMES' lead was short-lived.
In Morgan State's second at-bat, they tallied six runs to take the lead after two innings of play, 6-1. After scoring a run in the fourth to increase their lead, 7-1, the Lady Bears tabbed two more runs, including a solo home run from MSU's Kate Vosper, to win, 9-1.
For the Lady Bears, they collected nine runs on 11 hits, including four Morgan State players with multi-hit performances. Briana Jones led the charge, posting a hit and two RBIs in the Game One victory.
In Game Two, King batted 1-of-2 with a RBI while Alston and sophomore Vanessa Gomez each recorded a run scored in a losing effort.
Both clubs were scoreless after one, but Morgan State manufactured five runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead, 5-0. In the top of the third, the Lady Hawks fought back as they rallied two runs to narrow the deficit, 5-2. MSU answered, scoring three additional runs in the third to push their lead to six, 8-2. After tallying a run in the fourth, 9-2, the Lady Bears ended the contest early as they managed to score another run in the fifth to win by the final score, 10-2.
For Morgan State, Zina Constancia went a perfect 3-of-3 from the plate, including a solo shot in the fourth, while Sharaday Christina and Taylor McDougall each notched two hits in the Game Two win.
UMES wraps-up the regular-season against Delaware State University (DSU) May 3-4 at Hawks Field for Senior Day. Saturday's doubleheader begins 1:00 p.m., while Sunday's single seven inning contest takes place at noon.
