CAYCE, S.C. – The 2014 MEAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship began on Thursday at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.
Women’s Tennis Results
#1 Bethune-Cookman 4, #4 Hampton 0
Bethune-Cookman defeated Hampton in the first round of the 2014 MEAC Women’s Tennis Championship.
After capturing the doubles point, the Lady Wildcats won at the number one, two and four positions to win the match.
The Lady Wildcats advanced to the semifinals and will play Morgan State at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow.
#2 South Carolina State 4, #3 Delaware State 0
South Carolina State, the defending MEAC tournament champion, opened play in the quarterfinals with a 4-0 win over Delaware State.
SCSU took an early lead winning the doubles point, going into singles action with a 1-0 advantage. South Carolina State sealed the win by earning victories at the number one, three and six positions.
South Carolina State moves on to play Howard in the semifinal round tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
#1 Howard 4, No. 4 North Carolina Central 2
Howard and North Carolina Central battled for a spot in the semifinal round of the MEAC Women’s Tennis Championship.
Howard jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point over the NCCU. North Carolina Central rattled off wins at positions two and three, but the Lady Bison rallied, taking positions number one, four and five to win the match.
#2 Morgan State 4, #3 Florida A&M 3
Morgan State and Florida A&M tangled in the MEAC Women’s Tennis Championship quarterfinals as the Lady Bears edged the Lady Rattlers, 4-3.
Florida A&M jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. The Lady Rattlers also earned points at the number two and six positions. Morgan State rallied, picking up all points in singles play as the Lady Bears won at the number one, three, four and five positions.
MEN
#1 South Carolina State 4, #4 Howard 0
South Carolina State, the defending MEAC tournament champions, moved on to the semifinal round of the Men’s MEAC Tennis Championships with a 4-0 victory over Hampton.
SCSU went up 1-0 early with a doubles victory. South Carolina State captured three points at the number three, four and five positions to take the match.
South Carolina State will play Florida A&M in the semifinals tomorrow at Noon.
#2 Norfolk State 4, #3 Coppin State 0
The Norfolk State Spartans started the MEAC Tennis Tournament off with a 4-0 win over Coppin State.
Norfolk State won the doubles to take a 1-0 advantage in the match and completed the victory with wins at the number four, five and six positions.
Norfolk State will meet Bethune-Cookman in the semifinals of the tournament at Noon.
#3 Florida A&M 4, #2 Hampton 0
Florida A&M advanced to the semifinal round with a 4-0 victory over Hampton at the MEAC Tennis Championships.
Zach Evenden and Carlos Waitman won their doubles match, 8-0, to capture the doubles point to go up 1-0. The Rattlers took the match by capturing points at the number one, two and three positions.
#4 Bethune-Cookman 4, #1 Morgan State 2
Bethune-Cookman fell behind in doubles action and rallied to earn the upset victory over Morgan State in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tennis Championships.
Morgan State earned a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point and picked up a win at the number three positions. Bethune-Cookman picked up the win with victories at the number two, four, five and six positions.
