Howard tops Morgan State to claim MEAC North crown

WASHINGTON, D.C. - After one match cancellation and a change of venue, the Morgan State women's tennis team and Howard finally met Sunday afternoon for their highly anticipated MEAC North Division match.

The match which was originally scheduled for last Saturday, April 5 at the Morgan Courts, was cancelled and eventually rescheduled as a home match for Howard at the Banneker Courts to give the Lady Bison a Senior Day match after their scheduled match for yesterday against George Washington was cancelled.

One couldn’t have asked for a better stage than the one that was set for Sunday’s match. Two rival programs, undefeated in conference play, battling on the final weekend of league play with the winner claiming the 2014 division crown.

In the end, it would be the Lady Bison of Howard, who would close out the regular season undefeated in MEAC action, as they handed Morgan State a 4-0 loss at the Banneker Courts.

Howard (12-4, 5-0 MEAC) would claim the division crown with the win, while the loss for Morgan State would end the Lady Bears’ nine-match winning streak over MEAC North Division foes dating back to last season and put a halt to Morgan State capturing a second straight division title.

The lone win for Morgan State (5-8, 4-1 MEAC) came at No. 3 doubles, as Chelsi Russell and Cierra Plummer defeated Howard’s team of Mughnre and Bell by a score of 8-3.

However, the Lady Bison would win the doubles’ point by winning both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots by a count of 8-3. Howard would then claim the first three singles matches for the final score.

The Lady Bears, who finished as the No. 2 seed in the MEAC North Division, will now await the pairings for next week’s MEAC Championship (Thursday-Saturday, April 17-19) at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.
