SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State student-athletes Asia Stinson and Rachel White were among hundreds of students honored at the annual Honors Day Convocation on March 27. In all, 100 current and former student-athletes earned academic honors awards.
Stinson, a junior track & field athlete, was one of 31 students in the University System of Georgia to receive the 2014 University of System Georgia Board of Regents Academic Achievement Award.
During Thursday’s ceremonies, Stinson was presented with framed resolutions from both the Georgia Senate and House of Representatives by SSU president Cheryl D. Dozier. In a Georgia General Assembly earlier this year, her name was read loud on the floor in recognition of her exemplary academic achievements and entered into the official record.
In addition to the Academic Achievement Award, Stinson was honored as a Silver Medallion Scholar for her 3.9 GPA.
Stinson has played a pivotal role for the women’s track & field team over the last several years. She holds the school record in the 100 meter dash, and was part of the 4x200 and 4x100 relay team’s that currently hold school records.
White, a senior softball athlete, was recognized for academic success as a Gold Medallion Scholar for her 4.0 GPA, and was one of three to deliver a speech to her fellow honors’ recipients during the ceremony.
White matriculated to Savannah State from Waycross Community College, and earned a starting role as the catcher for the Lady Tigers in the current season. She was a member of the Lady Tiger team that reached the semifinals of the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Tournament.
