NSU Posts 6-1 Win Over Savannah State

FLORENCE, S.C.  – Norfolk State opened the MEAC Southern Division Roundup with a 6-1 victory over Savannah State on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans improve to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while Savannah State drops to 3-7 on the season and 0-2 in the MEAC.

NSU swept the doubles competition. Andrea Macchiavello and Liza Gordeeva led off with an 8-3 win against Andrea Pavlovic and Nadin Olsson. In the No. 2 position, Mafalda Lhorca and Krystal Scott defeated Angela Bonilla and Jennyfer Vivas, 8-0. Yvonne Kamegne and Maria Habiyaremye rounded things out with an 8-2 victory over Nicole Ashiedu and Tiffany Williams.

Gordeeva picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win against Pavlovic at the No. 1 singles spot. In the No. 2 slot, Macchiavello upended Bonilla, 6-0, 6-0. Kamegne competed at the No. 3 position, where she defeated Olsson, 6-1, 6-1. Scott claimed a 7-6(6), 6-2 win over Ashiedu in the No. 5 spot. Habiyaremye posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Bria Burrows at position No. 6. NSU’s only loss came at the No. 4 slot. Vivas defeated Lhorca, 6-4, 7-5, 1-0(4).

The Spartans return to the court on Sunday to take on Florida A&M in the MEAC Southern Division Roundup. The match begins at 3 p.m.

Morgan State defeats Hampton, 4-1, in MEAC action

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Morgan State men's tennis team opened up Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play with a home victory. The Bears downed the Hampton Pirates 4-1 Friday afternoon at Morgan State's new tennis courts.
 
Morgan State snapped a four-match losing skid as the Bears captured its first win of the season, and the Pirates record dropped to 2-6.
 
In the No. 1 position, Duk Young-Park outsted Advait Kirtane, 6-2, 6-2. Evan Ward dropped Aleksandre Daviliandze, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 2 position.
 
One of the toughest matchups of the day pitted Joshua Abraham versus Hampton's Josh McQueen. Abraham was able to pull out a hard fought 6-3, 7-5 victory.
 
Dmitry Borodkin dropped Henry Drakeford, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 6 position.
 
Morgan State returns to play on Tuesday, March 11 when they face Navy in Annapolis (Md.) in a non-conference tilt.
