Bethune-Cookman sweeps pair against UMass-Lowell

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Freshman Sabrina Anguiano drove in the game-winning run in the opener, then posted her first collegiate shutout to lead Bethune-Cookman to a 3-0,2-1 doubleheader sweep of UMass-Lowell Saturday at Sunnyland Park.

Anguiano's two-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seven scored Destinee Williams to give the Wildcats (8-14) the come-from-behind win.

In the second game, Anguiano scattered five hits and struck out four to improve to 3-6 on the season.

Kelsey Rodney drove in two runs in the second game and three of the Wildcats' four runs for the day. Williams scored three times. Bailey Conner struck out a season-high nine to get the first game win.

UMES falls in home opener to Retrievers
 
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team fell in their home opener to Maryland Baltimore-County (UMBC) at Lady Hawks Field. In the first game, Maryland Eastern Shore lost, 7-4, while dropping the second contest, 13-0.
 
With both setbacks, UMES fell to 2-14 overall whereas the Retrievers improved to 11-3 on the season.
 
As a team, the Lady Hawks collected 11 hits, led by Chelsea Alston, Vanessa Gomez, and Trenece Nash each recording two hits in the first game.
 
Trailing, 2-0, Maryland Eastern Shore cut into the deficit after Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) drove in Morgan King, 2-1, In the top of the third, UMBC began creating separation as they scored three runs in the inning, 5-1, followed by an additional two in the fourth, 7-1. In the bottom fourth, two Retrievers' errors gave the Lady Hawks life as they trimmed the deficit to four, 7-3. In their final at-bat, UMES added another run, but their rally fell short as they lost, 7-4.
 
In the first game, Maryland Baltimore-County notched 12 hits, led by Taylor Hall going 3-of-4 from the plate. Kaelin Jackson had a game-high three RBIs while Chelsea Bertoglio drive in two runs in the win.
 
In game two, the Lady Hawks could not find any rhythm offensively as they were held hitless by UMBC's Kelly Lane. In Lane's effort, she pitched a perfect game in five innings of work while striking out 10 UMES batters.
 
The Retrievers attacked Maryland Eastern Shore early as they scored five first inning runs, capped by a two-run blast from Hall over the leftfield fence, 5-0. In the top three, UMBC had a commanding lead, 7-0, and added insurance runs as they posted six more runs to win by the final score, 13-0.
 
On Sunday, these two clubs will meet in a doubleheader at Lady Hawks Field, located in Princess Anne, Md. First-pitches are scheduled for noon and 2:00 p.m.

Sablay, Stamps Spearhead DSU in Victories Over Rhode Island, Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – Playing for the first time since Feb. 23 due to inclement weather conditions along the east coast, the Delaware State softball team (7-2) extended its winning streak to six games Saturday afternoon in day one of the Longwood Invitational with victories over the Rhode Island Rams (1-7) and tournament host, Longwood (7-5).

Defeating the Rams 4-0 for the Hornets’ second shutout win of the season, infielder Jordan Stamps (2) went 2-for-4 with two RBI, including a single to center to drive in sophomore Nicole Gazzola in the first and solo home run in the seventh.

Infielder Rochelle Sablay (1), on the other hand, went yard as well with a two-run blast to left to put Delaware State up 3-0 in the third.

Pitching the entire game, freshman Vanessa Ciocatto (2-2) allowed four hits and no walks, despite only tallying one strikeout.

Later in the day, the Hornets pulled out a 9-4 win over the Lancers, sparked by a Sablay three-run homer in the first to give her squad the early advantage.

Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, the Lancers scored four runs to take the lead, beginning with catcher Megan Baltzell RBI-doubling to left field to cut the deficit to one.  LU also capitalized on a DSU error later in the frame to tie the game, followed by infielder Taylor Hedrick lying down an RBI sacrifice bunt to give her team the lead.

However, Delaware State’s offense came alive in the next two innings.

With the bases loaded and nobody out in the fifth, Sablay got things started when she reached on a fielder’s choice as infielder Chloe Oro scored from third, while Gazzola was thrown out at third.  Next up, Stamps (3) came up huge was once again, this time with a three-run home run to center field to make it a 7-4 ball game.

The following inning, the Hornets tacked on two more runs with Oro scoring from third on a wild pitch and Stamps RBI-singling to right to bring Gazzola.

At game’s end, both Stamps and Sablay tallied four RBI, while four Hornet players scored twice.  Oro and catcher Sandy Hawthorne, meanwhile, both drew two walks.

After relieving starter Tara Tursellino (4-0) in the fourth, Ciocatto (3-2) picked up the win allowing three hits, no runs and two walks.

Tomorrow, Delaware State will look to continue its winning ways tomorrow against Delaware (11 a.m.) and Longwood (1:15 p.m.).
