Hornets fall to Hawks, 84-70, in season finale
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. --- The Delaware State University men's basketball team appeared to get back into the game after trimming a 14-point second half deficit to five, but UMES held off the Hornets en route to an 84-70 MEAC win in the 2013-14 season finale for both teams at the Hychte Center this evening.
Delaware State ends the regular season with a 9-20 overall record and a 5-11 mark in the MEAC. The Hawks finished the regular season at 6-23 and 4-12.
Hakeem Baxter and Troy Snyder each scored 30 points for the Hawks to lead all players.
Casey Walker (14 points) and DeAndre Haywood (13) also reached double figures in scoring for the Hornets.
Walker climbed into eighth place on the Hornets' all-time scoring list during the contest. He now has 1432 career points.
Delaware State shot 61.3-percent in the second half (19-for-31), but was outscored 49-45 in the final 20 minutes.
The Hornets were 27-for-51 from the field for the game (52.9-percent), including five-of-15 from three-point territory (33.3-percent).
UMES nailed 28 of its 53 shots from the floor (52.8-percent). The Hawks were six-of-18 from beyond the arc (33.3-percent).
UMES won the rebound battle 31-25. The Hornets had more turnovers, 16-12.

Pirates run past North Carolina A&T to Stay Hot
HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men’s basketball team used a strong second half to run away from North Carolina A&T Thursday night at the HU Convocation Center, ending the regular season with an 89-71 win.
The Pirates (18-11, 13-3 MEAC) have won seven straight games and 10 of their last 11.
Sophomore guard Deron Powers led the way with 20 points for his third straight 20-point effort, hitting four 3-pointers and going 6-for-10 from the floor. Sophomore guards Brian Darden and Dwight Meikle each added 13 points.
Senior forward Du’Vaughn Maxwell had 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds in his final home game.
The Pirates shot 51.9 percent (28-for-54) from the floor and hit 10 of their 20 3-pointers.
N.C. A&T shot 40.4 percent (21-for-52) from the floor and hit seven of 17 3-pointers (41.2 percent) – though the Aggies did out-rebound the Pirates 37-33.
Richaud Pack led the Aggies with 14 points.

Hawkins’ Career Night Not Enough in Loss to NCCU
NORFOLK, Va. – A career performance from Malcolm Hawkins on Senior Night was unable to carry the Norfolk State men’s basketball team to a win over North Carolina Central on Thursday. Despite setting the school record for 3-pointers, Hawkins and his fellow teammates fell 76-70 to the Eagles at Joseph Echols Hall.
Hawkins tied his career high with 31 points, hitting 10-of-19 overall and 8-of-10 from 3-point range. He broke the previous school record of seven 3-pointers that has been achieved six different times, most recently by Corey Lyons on Dec. 20, 2008.
Pendarvis Williams was the only other Spartan player in double figures with 13 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Jeremy Ingram led the Eagles with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Jordan Parks added 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. NCCU finished the night 27-of-51 (52.9 percent).
The Spartans, on the other hand, shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54), including 12-of-19 from 3-point range. NSU finished one trey off the school record of 13 and had the most 3-pointers in a game since hitting 12 at Iona on Dec. 23, 2012.
The Eagles had just five turnovers compared to 15 for NSU, giving NCCU a 24-2 advantage in points off turnovers. The Eagles also turned the tables on the Spartans, outscoring NSU 34-16 in points in the paint.
