South Carolina State opens conference play with win over Norfolk State

ORANGEBURG, S.C.  – Freshman Liza Gordeeva picked up the Spartans’ only win in their 6-1 loss to South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Courts.

NSU is now 1-2 in conference play and 3-4 overall.

Gordeeva defeated Oleksandra Flippova, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0(3) at the No. 1 singles position. Sophomore Andrea Macchiavello fell to Klara Dohanlova, 1-6, 6-2, 1-6. In the No. 3 spot, junior Yvonne Kamegne suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Victoriia Khatcei. Junior Mafalda Lhorca fell to Intissar Rassif, 6-1, 6-0. S.C. State’s Marketa Marcanikova upended junior Krystal Scott, 6-1, 6-0. Closing out the singles competition for NSU was freshman Marie Habiyaremye. She fell to Dakota Brown, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles play, Macchiavello and Lhorca fell to Dohanlova and Rassif, 8-3, in the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 position, Gordeeva and Scott suffered an 8-1 loss to Khatcei and Marcanikova. Flippova and Nynke Van Der Goot were up 6-3 before play was abandoned.

The Spartans will face Savannah State on March 8 in the MEAC Southern Division Roundup. This year's roundup is scheduled for March 8-10 in Florence, S.C.

Uddin earns game victory as Temple tops UMES in Hawks’ season opener

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In his first home match of the 2014 season, University of Maryland Eastern Shore sophomore Mohin Uddin (Forestville, Md.) took a game from Temple's Santiago Canete in the first set. Uddin was not able to repeat the feat, as he and his fellow Hawks were defeated by Temple 7-0 Sunday at the Hawk Tennis Courts in Princess Anne. The result improves Temple's record to 3-8, while the Hawks start the season off at 0-1.

Uddin, a graduate of Central High School in Capitol Heights, Md. and electronic engineering major here at UMES, finished the match with a final score of 1-6, 0-6. All other Hawks were defeated by scores of 6-

0 and 6-0 in three separate singles matches. In the doubles competition, Temple took three matches, defeating the Hawks with two 8-0 victories and a default.

The match was viewed by a small yet supportive crowd of supporters who came out in the above average temperatures to cheer on the Hawks, which lasted about an hour and a half.

The men's team is still scheduled to play Stevenson on Wednesday in Princess Anne despite the current weather forecast.

Bethune-Cookman splits with Wright State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Bethune-Cookman split Sunday's matches with Wright State as the Lady Wildcats posted a 7-0 victory while the men fell 4-3.

Elizabeth Nyenwe's third straight win paced the Lady Wildcats first shutout since downing St. Thomas on opening day. B-CU (4-7) has won two of its last three.

In the men's competition, Santiago Lobelo and Diego Garavito brought the Wildcats (0-9) back to 3-2 before the Raiders (5-5) closed the match. Alvaro Barrera added a victory at No. 6 singles.

B-CU returns to action Tuesday, with the men hosting Belmont at noon. The women meet Campbell at 9 a.m., then face Savannah State in their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener at 3 p.m
