Lady Hawks unable to contain Coppin State
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team was unable to slow down a hot shooting Coppin State University (CSU) team as they lost, 80-64, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 5-15 overall (1-7 MEAC) while CSU improved to 11-11 (8-2 MEAC) on the season.
Sophomore forward Ashleigh Claybrooks registered her sixth career double-double, 12 points and 11 rebounds, to pace the Hawk attack, while freshman guard Mariah McCoy added 10 points in a losing effort.
Other notable Hawk performances included TeAmber Burke and Jessica Long combined for 23 points and eight boards in the loss.
The Lady Eagles shot nearly 53-percent, 36-for-68, from the floor, led by Kyra Coleman scoring a new career-high 30 points. Ommah Tayong notched a double-double, 12 points and 11 boards, in the win.
This Monday, the Lady Hawks travel down to Hampton, Va. where they will take on the Lady Pirates of Hampton University inside the HU Convocation Center. Game-time is set for 5:30 p.m.

Lady Pirates hold off rival Howard at home
HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women’s basketball used a surge in the second half to pull away from rival Howard Saturday evening at the HU Convocation Center, escaping to a 76-64 win to remain unbeaten in MEAC play.
The Lady Pirates (19-4, 10-0 MEAC), winners of nine straight, are one win away from their fifth straight 20-win season. Hampton has won its last 16 home MEAC games, and the Lady Pirates have won their last 40 games against MEAC foes (including conference tournament games).
Junior guard Kenia Cole led four Lady Pirates in double figures with 24 points – 20 of which came in the second half – going 8-for-15 from the floor and hitting three of her seven 3-pointers. Senior guard Nicole Hamilton added 14 points and four assists.
Senior forward Alyssa Bennett and freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas.) each added 13 points, and Bennett grabbed 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season.
Redshirt-sophomore forward Brielle Ward grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.
The Lady Pirates shot 35.9 percent (23-for-64) from the floor and made seven of their 22 3-pointers (31.8 percent). Hampton out-rebounded Howard 45-38, and the Lady Pirates turned 18 Howard turnovers into 18 points.
Hampton also held a 22-12 edge in points in the paint.
Howard (9-13, 5-4 MEAC) shot 40.4 percent (21-for-52) from the floor and hit seven of its 15 3-pointers (46.7 percent).
Shavonne Duckett led the Bison with 16 points.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Monday, taking on Maryland Eastern Shore at the HU Convocation Center at 6 p.m.

Gordon’s Last Second Bucket Lifts NSU Over Morgan State 64-63
BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior forward Rachel Gordon made a layup with one second left to give Norfolk State a 64-63 victory over Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.
NSU improves to 6-3 in MEAC play and 10-10 overall, while Morgan State falls to 0-9 in the conference and 2-20 on the season.
Morgan State held a 63-60 lead over the Spartans with 1:08 left to play. Junior Ebony Brown knocked down a jumper with 49 seconds left to pull NSU within one. Morgan State’s Tracey Carrington missed a layup on the other end and junior Quineshia Leonard grabbed the rebound to give the Spartans the ball with 11 seconds left to play. Junior Rae Corbo tried missed the jumper with six seconds on the clock, but Gordon got the offensive board and the put back to seal the win for NSU.
Gordon posted her 11th double-double of the season and led the Spartans with 19 points and 17 rebounds. She now has 967 career rebounds at NSU. Gordon needs 34 more boards to pass Sharon Wallace for first place.
Carrington led all scorers with 23 points, and shot 85.7 percent (12-of-14) from the free throw line on the afternoon.
For the game, NSU shot only 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the field and shot 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from the free throw line. The Spartans outscored the Lady Bears, 30-18, in the paint and also out-rebounded the Lady Bears, 55-38. The last time NSU had at least 50 boards this season was at UMES on Jan. 15 when the Spartans totaled 51.
Aside from Gordon, Corbo and Brown finished the game in double-figures, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Spartans return home to face Howard on Monday night. Game time is 6 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.

Bulldogs Slip Past Hornets Saturday Afternoon, 64-60
DOVER, Del. – In an effort to pick up its first MEAC win at home this season, the Delaware State women’s basketball team (6-15, 1-8 MEAC) came up short to the visiting South Carolina State Bulldogs (6-14, 4-6 MEAC), 64-60.
With the victory, the Bulldogs snapped a five-game skid, while the Lady Hornets dropped their second straight contest. In addition, leading scorer (20.7 ppg) and rebounder (10.2 rpg) forward Tierra Hawkins (shoulder) missed her fourth consecutive game.
Raven Bankston finished with a game-high 26 points (11-of-28), to go along with five rebounds, three assists and two blocks after missing the previous game because of an ankle injury. Deanna Harmon finished with 12 points (3-of-9), six rebounds and four assists as the only other Hornet to score in double figures.
As a unit, DSU shot 40 percent (23-of-57) and were out-rebounded, 43-37. From the charity stripe, the Lady Hornets struggled and went 10-for-18 (.556).
South Carolina State was led by Cabriel Duren tallying 21 points (6-of-14), seven rebounds, five assists and four steals effort. Collectively, the Bulldogs shot 39 percent (22-of-57) and 71 percent (17-of-24) from the free throw line.
Delaware State welcomes Savannah State to Memorial Hall at 5:30 p.m., on Monday.

Colyer Surges in Double Overtime, Leading Bethune-Cookman Past North Carolina Central
DURHAM, N.C. - Concluding a hard-fought back-and-forth contest on Saturday, redshirt senior point guard Shakeyia Colyer simply took over the game in the second overtime, scoring seven of Bethune-Cookman’s eight points in the period, leading the Lady Wildcats to 66-60 victory over North Carolina Central at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
Colyer and fellow guard Chastity René Taylor each scored 16 points to lead the Lady Wildcats. Taylor logged three scores from the perimeter. Center Kailyn Williams earned her third double double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds, along with three blocks. Taylor Houston rounded out the top scorers with 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.
Jessica Freeman took the Lady Eagles on her back, putting up 32 shots, including 11 in the overtime periods. She led all scorers with 25 points.
The Lady Wildcats continue their road swing in North Carolina, heading just west to Greensboro for Monday night’s matchup with North Carolina A&T. The Lady Aggies topped Florida A&M on Saturday, 82-77 at the Ellis F. Corbett Sports Center.
