Morgan State drops opener at Navy
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Morgan State women’s tennis team began the 2014 campaign with a 7-0 non-conference loss at Navy on Sunday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
Navy improved to 7-1 on the season, including six straight wins and extended its home winning streak to 22 matches.
Morgan State, which was picked to win the Mid-Eastern Athletics Conference North Division title in this season’s preseason poll, captured its lone win at No. 2 doubles with Cierra Plummer and Chelsi Russell defeating Navy’s Erin Snook and Summer Ralston, 6-2.
However, Navy, which swept all six singles matches, won the doubles point by winning a tough match at No. 1 singles and at No. 3.
The Lady Bears (0-1) will travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take on Virginia Tech in a non-conference match on Saturday, Feb. 8.
Bears Fall In Doubleheader at the VCU 4-1
RICHMOND, Va. – The Morgan State men's team dropped a pair of matches at the VCU-hosted 4-1 Invitational in Richmond, Va. on Saturday. The men were shutout by nationally ranked VCU Rams, 5-0, followed by a 4-1 loss to the Longwood Lancers.
The VCU men's team was ranked number 31 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) coming into the weekend's matchup.
Duk Young-Park battled at No. 1 singles against Michal Voscek before falling in the end 6-0, 7-6 (7).
Morgan State had a better effort against Longwood, but fell to the Lancers 4-1.
Evan Ward downed Edward Becker 7-6 (4), 6-2?to notch the only singles victory of the day.
The Morgan State men next play on Sat., Feb. 15th on the road against the UMBC Retrievers. Play is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Lady Wildcats win opener, fall to FGCU
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Bethune-Cookman managed a split of its opening weekend matches, taking an 8-0 decision at St. Thomas while falling 7-0 to Florida Gulf Coast.
Against St. Thomas on Saturday, the Lady Wildcats only dropped four games in three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, then got straight set matches from Mina Matsuba, Maria Sablina, Elizabeth Nyenwe and Ancia Ifill in singles play. Valentina Beresiarte rallied to take a three-set win at the No. 5 singles position.
The No. 1 doubles team of Matsuba/Sablina registered B-CU’s lone victory Sunday at Florida Gulf Coast downing Sarah and Elizabeth Means 8-4. The Eagles took the other two doubles matches to earn that point and then swept all six singles matches.
B-CU (1-1) returns to action Wednesday at UCF.
On the men’s side, Bethune-Cookman dropped two road matches over the weekend, 5-4 at St. Thomas and 5-2 at Florida Gulf Coast.
Saturday’s match at St. Thomas came down to one match after B-CU rallied to a 4-4 tie, but St. Thoma’ Matias Dasso outlasted Pablo Lopez 4-6,6-2,7-5 in the deciding No. 6 singles match-up.
On Sunday, Walid Gtari and Diego Garavito registered singles wins for the Wildcats.
B-CU faces Florida Atlantic Saturday.
