Norfolk State Comes Away with 66-60 Win Over Howard
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Norfolk State erased an eight-point deficit early in the second half and then held off a late rally by Howard as the Spartan men’s basketball team downed the Bison 66-60 on Monday night at Burr Gymnasium.
The Spartans trailed by eight at the intermission and then again early in the second half after the teams traded 3-pointers. Over the next eight and a half minutes, though, the Spartans limited the Bison to just one bucket during a 17-2 run that put NSU up by seven.
The Spartans led by as many as 11 with five and a half minutes to go, but Howard put up one last fight with an 11-2 run to get to within two with 2:32 on the clock. NSU scored the last four points of the game to hold on to the win, and more importantly move into sole possession of third place in the MEAC at 10-3 following Morgan State’s loss on Monday night.
The victory, the fourth in the last five games for the Spartans, moved their overall record to 16-11 and guaranteed NSU a winning record for the season for the third year in a row.
NSU shot 21-of-47 for the game (44.7 percent) and also had a big edge in free throw attempts, hitting 19-of-31 compared to just a 6-of-12 effort from the Bison.
Senior Riley Maye finished one point short of his career high with 14 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting off the bench. Seniors Anell Alexis and Pendarvis Williams added 13 and 12 points, respectively, while junior Kievyn Lila-St. Rose also scored in double figures with 10.

Hornets hold off Morgan State
DOVER, Del. --- Delaware State blew a double-digit second half lead before rebounding for a 59-56 MEAC win over Morgan State in Memorial Hall this evening.
Morgan State had the final shot of the game, but Blake Bozeman's long three-point attempt missed wide as time expired.
The Hornets won for the fifth time in the last six games to improve to 9-18 overall and 5-9 in the MEAC. Morgan State fell to 11-14 and 9-4.
Kendall Gray recorded his fourth straight double-double, and 10th of the season, with 16 points and 13 rebounds. He also had a team high six blocks to tie the school single-season record of 75 he set last season.
Gray has combined for 60 points (15.0 pg) and 47 rebounds (11.8 pg) in the last four contests. In addition, he has hit 29-of-40 shots from the floor in the last five games (72.5%).
Casey Walker came off the bench to add 16 points for the Hornets. His performance was highlighted by three-of-five shooting from three-point territory. Walker has nine three-pointers in the last two games and a team-high 52 for the season. Charles Burley contributed a career-high 11 points and four assists to the win.
Justin Black led all players with 21 points for the Bears.
The Hornets also avenged a 77-64 road loss to Morgan State on Feb. 1.
The Hornets were 20-for-55 from the field (36.4%), including three-of-13 from three-point territory (23.1%). DSU struggled at the free throw line, hitting on 16 of 26 shots (61.5%).
Morgan State was 20-for -51 overall from the field and four-of-20 from beyond the arc (20%). The Bears were 12-for-19 from the charity stripe.
The Bears won the rebound battle 42-33, although the Hornets committed eight fewer turnovers (11to-19).
The Hornets return to action on Sat. (Mar. 1) against Howard in their 2013-14 home finale. Game time is 4:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

Snyder nets double-double in UMES loss to Hampton
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Troy Snyder (Chicago, Ill.) notched his third double-double in the past five games, but his effort was not to be mirrored by his teammates, as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team fell to Hampton, 104-89, before 1,038 at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center on Monday night.
The points scored in the game was the second most of the season for the Hawks. UMES has now lost eight consecutive to Hampton.
With the decision, UMES drops to 4-22, 2-11 MEAC, while Hampton ups its record to 16-11, 11-3 MEAC.
UMES was led in the game by Snyder, who notched 23 points and 10 rebounds. He was 10-of-18 from the floor in 39 minutes. Devon Walker had 19 points and drilled three three-pointers, while Ishaq Pitt had a season-high 15 points. Hakeem Baxter had 14 points and dished out four assists in a game-high 40 minutes. UMES shot just 26-percent from long-range in the game, but scored 27 points off of turnovers.
Hampton was paced by two players with double-double efforts. Du'Vaughn Maxwell had 16 points and 10 boards with seven assists, while Jervon Pressley had 12 points and 12 boards. Deron Powers had a team-high 20 points and five assists. Brian Darden scored 14 points courtesy of a 4-for-9 effort from long-range, while Breon Key had 12 points.
UMES returns to action on Saturday, March 1 at 4 p.m., when the Hawks hit the road for Coppin State. The game is the first of two consecutive for UMES as they conclude the regular season with two road games and one home match against Delaware State on March 6.
